Lawrence Township right-hander Matt Frock put the area bowling scoring surge in recent months into very simple terms.
“The ball companies keep dropping balls, and people are just blowing it up,” said the 46-year-old right-hander.
Frock, who owns 28 career 800 series, is no different.
He recently had Vince Yoder drill up a new Roto Grip Rubicon UC3 at Victory Pro Shop. Has it been a success?
Frock shot 300 with the ball right out of the box his first night, added a fourth-place finish In a one-ball tournament at Roseland Lanes his second time and then finished a trifecta with an 804 series in the Tuesday Las Vegas league at Eastbury Bowling Center.
Frock’s 800 included games of 274, 276 and 254. “I’ve had a pretty good run with that ball,” said Frock, who averages between 225 and 233 while bowling in four leagues, including the Northeast Ohio Travel League.
Frock started his night with six strikes before a seven-count spare. He then struck to the final ball in the 10th.
“I decided to make a move then to see my reaction heading into Game 2, and it was not the right move,” said Frock, who also had a seven-count on that final ball.
In Game 2, Frock started with two strikes before leaving a 2-4-5-8 spare in the third frame and converting. He then struck into the 10th to set up his run at 800.
In Game 3, it was more of the same as Frock had the first seven strikes before leaving a 10-pin. He then struck in the ninth.
“I knew with a double I could get to 270s again, but I just labeled a 10-pin,” Frock said. “I tightened up a little on that. I knew I just had to stay clean to get the 800. Once I made that, I was all right.”
Frock is participating in more tournament action this season, and has had some watchful eyes from Yoder.
“He has watched me a couple of times and drills all my equipment,” Frock said. “He puts it in my hand and I strike with it.”
Including at least one new ball.
