H.S. bowling: Stars are out for annual SCHSBC matches

PERRY TWP. — The Stark County High School Bowling Conference’s 26 teams sent 42 of its best players to do battle during Saturday’s annual All-Star Match at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes.

In a change from the past, two separate matches were conducted among the league’s four divisions — also a first this season.

The Federal Division boys and girls faced their Southeast Division counterparts in two matches; the American and National divisions faced off in the others.

The Federal teams gained a sweep in their matches, with the boys gaining a 2,741-2,425 win over the Southeast, and the Federal girls earning a 2,516-2,270 win.

The National also gained a sweep against the American, winning the boys match 2,448-2,373 and the girls contest 2,000-1,912.

COFFELT HAS BOYS’ TOP GAME

The Federal boys were led by Green’s Taylor Barton with a 491 series. But the award for high game went to McKinley senior Alex Coffelt with a 257 in Game 1 en route to a 486 series.

“I’m just practicing everyday, working on form and function,” said Coffelt, who will be studying welding at the University of Rio Grande in the fall. “Just keeping my hand behind the all, keeping my feet slow and hitting my mark.’

Coffelt, who also participated in last week’s Pin Point Youth Bowling Club’s All-Star Invitational at Hall of Fame, said the shot was “fun … more repeatable.”

“It broke down a lot and I had to move left a lot quicker,” said Coffelt, who plans to stay sharp during the summer months bowling in sport-shot leagues.

Southeast was led by New Philadelphia’s Zach Schupbach’s 401 series. Claymont’s Brok Maurer had the team’s high game with 211.

In the National’s victory, Massillon’s Jaxon Satterfield turned in the high series with 437, including a 241 high game, and Triway’s Brandon Rich added 406.

Canton South’s Aaron Knop led the American with a 398 series.

TUCKER TOPS GIRLS’ GAMES

McKinley senior Brooke Tucker turned in the high game in the Federal girls victory with a 247 in Game 1, with Green’s Veda Hughes adding a 402.

“It played very well for me. A couple of shots I got outside it would kind of take off, but I got it inside and it would slide a little bit but still carry so I’m not complaining,” said Tucker, who plans on participating in adult leagues during the summer to stay sharp. “It was pretty similar to last week except I was using a different ball and playing a different line.”

The two high series came out of the Southeast, with Sandy Valley’s Miah Delaney rolling a 464 series, including a 242 game, and Dover’s Kaylie Gibson adding a 448 with a 245 game.

Central Catholic senior Alina Stebbins led the National team with a 392 series, including a match-high 201 game.

Carrollton’s Tara Oberlin was high for the American team with a 384 series.

First-place team champions received medals for their victories.

The conference’s annual banquet, postponed last week due to a scheduling conflict, will be held at 1 p.m. May 1 at Santangelo’s Party Center in Massillon.

Tickets still are available. They can be purchased from 4 to 6 p.m. April 21 or from 5 to 6 p.m. April 26 at Park Centre Lanes. Those needing refunds due to conflicts with the new dates can obtain those also during those times.
