Briefs: Gribble Painting No. 3 takes Stark USBC title; travel league holds rolloff

CANTON — With Ray Cook throwing one of the event five 300 games, Gribble Painting No. 3 captured the team title during the 101st Stark USBC Open City team tournament at Eastbury Bowling Center.

Gribble Painting finished with 3,641 total pinfall, 11 pins ahead of Roosters, to top the 30-team field.

The top nine teams in the event cashed, with the low to cash being 3,465. The event drew 95 teams.

Cook finished his night with a 794 series to lead the team. Other team members included John Randolph 753, Jason Gribble 641, Jon Adkins 686 and Rich Stoffer 767.

There were three 800 series rolled during the team event, led by Dylan Rinella’s 846, which included games of 298 and 300. Other 800s came from Michael Emerick, who had 290 and 288 en route to 826, and Paul Sanko III, who had 300 during his 822 series.

Other 300 games were rolled by Brady Forrester and Eddie Prowell.

In addition, four 700 series were rolled by women during the team event, including Theresa Terrigan with 731 and 701, Kim Zerbey 713 and Kristi McDermitt 711.

Singles and doubles in the tournament will conclude Friday.

TRAVELING LEAGUE CROWNS CHAMPION

AKRON — The Waikem Auto Group team of Branden Ball, John Randolph and Gary Liber Jr. captured the Northeast Ohio Travel League title during the recent rolloff at Spins Bowl Akron.

The rolloff was in a best-of-five Baker System matches format with eight teams involved, four each from the American and National divisions.

In the title match, Waikem, top-seeded in the American Division, defeated Spins Bowl-Kent, top seeded in the National, 3-2. Waikem broke the 2-2 tie by winning the final game 223-199. Spins Bowl-Kent team members included Kevin Schott, Brett McCourry and Ryan Trowbridge.

In other highlights during the matches, Storm Bowling got a 4-6-7-9 split conversion from Alex McCourry in Game 5 to advance along with Jeff Mowls converting a 4-6-7-8-10 Greek church split to help give his team a win in its opening match.

The league’s annual draft is set for 7 p.m. May 21 at Eastbury Bowling Center. The league has 16 teams in four divisions (two each in American and National) and has a $25 weekly fee while bowling second shifts on Thursday evenings.
