SOB BRIEFS: Billings, Nolen top sweeper, upcoming events

AKRON — Top-seeded Dean Billings and James Nolen earned first place during Sunday’s Spins Bowl-Akron doubles sweeper at Spins Bowl-Akron.

Billings and Nolen, who went 1-2 during last month’s singles event and captured the doubles side pot, had 444 to stop second-seeded Joe Bailey and Jason Sollars, who finished with 429.

Billings and Nolen topped the field with 1,947 total pinfall, finishing 13 pins ahead of Bailey and Sollars.

Sollars and Bailey reached the title match by stopping third-seeded Matt Latarski and Royce Fry 446-404.

Ryan Liederbach and Dan Marriott, the No. 4 seed, fell in the opening match to Latarski and Fry 494-492.

Liederbach and Marriott earned the final stepladder finals spot with 1,900, finishing 28 pins ahead of Teroy Wade and Kyle Brooks.

Bailey had the event’s lone 300 game on the house oil patter in Game 4 of qualifying, and Latarski had the top individual four-game series with 1,041. Marriott and Liederbach had the high team game of 549.

The event drew 18 teams.

Match 1: Matt Latarski-Royce Fry d. Ryan Liederbach-Dan Marriott 494-492. Liederbach-Marriott win $130.

Match 2: Jason Collars-Joe Bailey d. Latarski-Fry 446-404. Letarski-Fry win $180.

Championship: Dean Billings-James Noel d. Bailey-Sollars 444-429. Billings-Nolen win $660; Bailey-Sollars win $360.

COLLEGE BOWL TOURNAMENTS RETURNS NOV. 19

CANTON — College Bowl Tournaments will hold a singles event at 10 a.m. Nov. 19 at Eastbury Bowling Center.

Entry fee is $65, with the event being rolled on the house oil pattern. Bowler will roll four qualifying games, moving pairs after each game. The field will then be cut to the top eight for single-game elimination matches until two remain for the title.

First place will pay $500 based on 40 bowlers.

HIGH SCHOOL SEASON SET TO KICK OFF

NORTH CANTON — The Stark County High School Bowling Conference will hold its annual Early Bird Kickoff Tournament at 9 a.m. Nov. 19 at Park Centre Lanes.

A full field of 18 boys and 18 girls teams is expected for the event. Admission is free, with fans being permitted for the first time since the 2019 season.

Teams will bowl two regular games and eight Baker System games before the field is cut to the top eight teams in each division for the championship rounds. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be a best-of-three matchup; the championship finals will be best-of-five.

The conference is operating with 23 teams this season in four divisions.
