Women’s feature: Mowls consistency shows with five 700 series this season

NORTH CANTON — Breanna Mowls has a very simple game.

But it all revolves around consistency.

“I’ve been practicing my form, and I’ve been getting better trying to come up behind the ball. Throwing it better with more consistency,” the 26-year-old Plain Township right-hander said. “I’ve been having problems pulling the ball across my body.”

The work is showing in her scoring. The Scheetz employee and mother of two has five 700 series this season, with a high of 727. That came in the Custom Poly Ladies league at Park Centre Lanes.

But she also has a 721 in the Hannon Electric league, a predominantly male-dominated league, also at Park Centre. While her Wednesday league is a trio, she is part of a five-person group Tuesdays, with her father, Jeff Mowls, also on the team.

“I really think bowling the trio does make a difference in my game. I can keep up with a consistent form,” Mowls said. “In the trio, it’s go, go, go while in the men’s league, you have to sometimes sit around and wait more.

“The speed of play makes a difference.”

Mowls does have a pair of 800 series to her credit, with a high of 804. Both also came at Park Centre.

And on one of her 800s, an 803, she didn’t realize what she had until it was over.

“I really didn’t know what I was shooting. I was just going with the flow and in my groove,” said Mowls, who averages 217 in her women’s league and 204 in the Tuesday league. “I had some men coming down watching me and congratulating me.

“It was like, ‘oh my gosh, I shot an 800.’ I didn’t even know.”

Mowls added a new Roto Grip Gem to her arsenal this season, and it has become her go-to ball. But not without figuring out some things on the lanes.

“It’s a very strong ball, stronger than I’m used to. So I have to work on not pulling it across my body,” Mowls said. “With the women’s league, the speed helps with that. In the men’s league, sometimes that 15-pound ball feels like 30 pounds when you’re sitting around.”

She decided on the ball after watching a video of another woman throwing it. That bowler had a similar style to Mowls.

“I told my dad about it, and he got the ball for me,” Mowls said. “It’s my favorite ball so far.”

Does bowling against the men get the competitive juices flowing more in Mowls?

“I don’t think I’m a very competitive person. It’s just me, the pins and the ball,” Mowls said. “But I do enjoy bowling in the men’s league … it’s just more fun for me.”

And her consistency in both leagues also makes bowling fun overall.
