Bowling briefs: Testa, Oravecz earn tourney wins; several events set this week

TESTA EARNS WIN IN ERIE

Ten Back Pro Shop co-owner Frank Testa captured the second annual Pam Malone Eastlane Memorial Tournament on Sunday at Eastland Bowl in Erie, Pa.

Testa, who qualified seventh overall in the 112-bowler field (participants were able to bowl multiple squads), shot 662 for the three-game qualifier on a challenging pattern. There were a total of 165 scores entered.

Testa then won four matches as the field was cut to the top 16 for single-game match-play rounds, receiving a bye in the first round.

First place as worth $2,000.

ORAVECZ WINS MARCH MADNESS

Matt Oravecz defeated Jason Johnson 460-329 in the final two-game match to captured the 10th annual March Madness Tournament on Sunday at Clutch Lanes and Sports Center in Cuyahoga Falls.

A full field of 64 players rolled three qualifying games before the field was ranked in a round of 64, with each bowler then bowling two-game matches to emerge from rounds of 32, 16, eight, four and the championship final. The event was bowled on the 2021 PWBA BVL Open oil pattern.

To reach the final match, Oravecz defeated Ryan Trowbridge 379-346 and Johnson topped Jim Fellows 409-331 during the semifinal round.

Others reaching the final eight included Martez Walker, Tyler Meredith, Eric Long and Mike Thewes. The top 16 cashed.

Ryan Liedervach was the No. 1 seed after a 735 series during qualifying, followed by Joe Bailey (656), Reggie Hawthorne (654) and Jason Bogavich (652). 

Oravecz, who finished 45th during qualifying with a 497 series, defeated Curtis Duffield, Devin Carver and Bogavich to reach the semifinal round. Johnson, the No. 28 seed after qualifying with a 549 series, topped Gwin Eckert, Richard Yates Jr. and D.J Assaff en route to the semifinals

First place paid $2,000. The tourney was sponsored by Kreative Touch Property Services.
