PBA: Chapman leads PTQ for Tournament of Champions

FAIRLAWN — AJ Chapman averaged 237.8 for eight games to lead nine qualifiers into the PBA Tournament of Champions on Monday at AMF Riviera Lanes.

Chapman, a 29-year-old right-hander, finished with 1,899 total pinfall, just 46 pins ahead of Tim Gruendler to top the PTQ.

The final spot went to Cody Shoemaker, a Hanover, Pa., right-hander, who finished with 1,772, just five pins ahead of Patrick Hanrahan.

Others making the field and their pinfall totals included Nicholas Pate (1,834), Chillicothe’s Brandon Novak (1,812), Frank Snodgrass (1,812), JR Raymond (1,788), Jean Perez (1,777) and Brad Miller (1,775).

Among area players, Parma’s Patrick Dombrowski was 17th with 1,712, Canton’s Tony Johnson finished 46th with 1,527 and Northfield’s Ryan Liederbach was 50th in the 51-player PTQ field with 1,446.

The field of 64 players will begin their first six-game qualifying round at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with a second qualifying round set for 5 p.m. The tournament is being contested on the Johnson 40 oil pattern.

First place is worth $100,000.
