Bowling briefs: Ohio Masters coming; PBA holds two regionals in Western Ohio, but two are coming to NE Ohio

TOURNAMENT: Ohio Masters set for Dayton
DAYTON — The sixth annual Bowler X Ohio Masters is set for Sept. 2 and 3 at Poelking Woodman Lanes in Kettering.

This event is open to all adult bowlers who are sanctioned and live in an Ohio USBC association or bowled a minimum of nine games in an Ohio-sanctioned association during the 2022-23 season. Youth bowlers are not permitted to participate.

Bowlers will roll five qualifying games at 11 a.m. Sept. 2 before the field is cut to the top 50 percent to bowl five games during the 5:30 p.m. night block. The top 32 scores overall will advance to Sunday match play, based on 120 entries.

During match-play, bowlers will bowl two-game matches by seed until two bowlers remain to bowl for the title.

Entry fee is $100, with a maximum field of 140 bowlers. The oil pattern will be revealed prior to tournament weekend. Dawn Altimore-Eckenrode is the tournament director.

PBA REGIONAL: Tackett takes regional title
MINSTER — EJ Tackett, who claimed five overall titles in 18 events on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour this season, bowled on the regional level this week and walked away with another win.

Tackett, the No 1 seed after averaging 235.81 over 16 games, defeated No. 3 seed Zach Weidman of Indianapolis 236-226 to claim the win in the PBA Kremer Roofing Central Classic at Community Lanes.

Tackett took home $4,000.

Tackett, who sat eighth after qualifying, moved to fourth after the first four-game advancer round and to the top after the second. Qualifying leader D.J. Archer finished ninth overall.

Urbana left-hander Graham Fach, the No. 2 seed, fell to Weidman in the semifinals 248-202. Weidman defeated Imperial, Pa., lefty Samuel Dewitt III 289-207 during his opening match. Dewitt also topped Versailles’ Michael Davidson 214-206 in the stepladder opener.

The players next head to Coldwater for a super regional, with Fach being the defending champion in the PBA bowlerstore.com Classic, presented by Moxy’s Xtra Pair. First place will pay $10,000. Kyle Troup, Chris Via, Kevin McCune, AJ Johnson and Dick Allen are scheduled to join the party in pursuit of the five-figure payday.

The PBA Central Region will be holding a pair of tournaments in Northeast Ohio in September:

  • The PBA50 J.D. Producing-Triway Lanes Central Open is set for Sept. 8 through 10 at Triway Lanes in Wooster. Jeff Johnson is the defending champion. Two eight-game qualifying squads are set for 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sept. 9 with the top one-third of the field advancing to an eight-game casher’s round at 9 a.m. Sunday before the stepladder finals.
  • The PBA50-PBA60 Doubles-Park Centre Lanes Central Open is set for Sept. 22 through 24 at Park Centre Lanes in North Canton. Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III and Sam Macarone are the defending champions. Teams will bowl an eight-game qualifier on Sept. 23 before the top 12 teams advance to round-robin match play on Sept. 24 based on 36 entries. In addition, the Smith-Behra Pro-Am will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22 with a $25 entry fee. Bowers will bowl three nine-pin, no-tap games with different PBA50 pros. Sponsorships are available.   • The PBA member-nonmember event, set for Sept. 8 through 10 at Wabash Lanes in New Philadelphia has been canceled.
