
WOOSTER — Ashtabula’s David Johnson, who claimed his one PBA50 Tour title in 2022, compiled an 11-1 match-play record en route to rolling to a win at the PBA50 J.D. Producing-Triway Lanes Central Open on Sunday at Triway Lanes.
Johnson, the No. 4 seed following qualifying after averaging 237.0, averaged 240.6 during Sunday’s 12-game match-play round to finish with 5,114 total pinfall, including bonus pins.
He did not suffer a match loss until Game 12 in the position round against tournament runner-up Larry Achten (242-223). Johnson, a 62-year-old right-hander, had a high game of 290 on Sunday and a low of 219. He finished the event with a 239.20 average.
Achten, of Chesterland, Ind., finished second overall with a 9-3-0 match-play mark and 4,794.
Qualifying leader Dale Csuhta, a 68-year-old Wadsworth right-hander, took third with 4,745 after a 6-4-2 match-play mark.
Also in the top 12 were North Olmsted’s Michael Clark Jr. (6th, 4,372) and Vermillion’s John Shreve Jr. (10th, 4,319) .
Csuhta led Saturday qualifying with 1,960 while averaging 245.0. He finished 55 pins ahead of defending champion Jeff Johnson of Freeport, Ill. Johnson finished fourth overall with 4,422.
No 300 games were thrown in the original 38-player field.
The Central Region’s PBA players will next be in Fishers, Ind, on Friday through Sunday for the Boss Now Plow-O’Brien Auto-Radical Cantral Open at Pinheads.

PARK CENTRE SITE OF PBA50-60 DOUBLES
NORTH CANTON — The PBA50 Central Region will return to the area Sept. 22 through 24 for the PBA50-60 Doubles-Park Centre Central Open at Park Centre Lanes.
The weekend will begin with a pro-am set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22 with. $25 entry fee and separate divisions for youth, high school/collegiate, adult, seniors (50-and-over) and Special Olympians. Contact the center for information.
The tournament opens with an eight-game qualifier at 10 a.m. Sept. 23, with the top 12 teams advancing to Sunday’s 12-game round-robin match play, based on 36 teams.
Admission is free, with a practice session also set for 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 22.
