COLUMBUS — Qualifying leader Gary Reh stopped John Shreve Jr. 208-195 in the title match to top the Ohio Matchplay Tournament’s Veterans Day-Anniversary Tournament at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
Reh, a 65-year-old left-hander from Jasper, Ind., had 1,170 during the five-game qualifier, a 234 average, to top the 43-player field, eight pins ahead of Gary Duarard (1,162).
During match play, Reh stopped Robert Robinson (257-208) and the previous tourney champion Vince Yoder (233-227) before defeating Shreve.
Shreve, the No. 6 seed who has now finished second in all three OMT events this season, topped Jim Petzel (214-194) and Jimmy Vance (254-200) to reach the finals on the OMT 45 oil pattern.
Reh set the pace most of the game with a double, spare, then another double while Shreve struck one time in his first five frames.
Shreve made a ball change and moved right and left a 2-4-5-8 which he spared and he made another ball change to a stronger piece and left a 4-pin on the left lane. Reh opened in the eighth and gave Shreve a chance to make it closer which he did with a strike on the right lane in the nine frame.
Then Shreve left a solid 10-pin on his first ball in the 10th, spared it, and left another corner pin to force Gary to get the first strike in which he did.
Reh won $1,000 for his victory.
The next OMT event is the third annual Christmas shootout, set for noon Dec. 9 at HP Lanes in Columbus with a $110 entry fee. Tournaments are open to bowlers age 50 and older.
