H.S. tourney report: Wadsworth, Green takes Muskingum Invite titles

CANTON — Wadsworth High School’s boys and Green’s girls earned overall titles during the Muskingum University Invitational recently at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes.

The Grizzlies, the No 7 seed in the eight-team championship round, stopped top-seeded North Canton Hoover 2-1 in the best-of-three Baker System title match to claim the title.

Hoover was the qualifying leader with 3,279, shooting a tournament-high 985 during Game 3 of the three regular games, three Baker games qualifying round. The cut to the top eight in the 25-team field came at 2,998 as GlenOak gained the spot by just 14 pins over Boardman.

In the girls division, No. 4 seed Green stopped No. 2 seed Fairport Harbor Harding 2-1 in the title match to claim the win. The Bulldogs swept past No. 5 seeded Struthers and defeated top-seeded Perry 2-1 in the semifinals.

The Panthers were the qualifying leaders with 3,022, finishing 178 pins ahead of the Skippers. Tallmadge gained the final spot in match play with 2,438, finishing 32 pins ahead of Hoover in the 20-team field.

Green’s Madison Perrine was the high girls series with 599, followed by Perry’s Kiele Polling with 563. Boys individual results were not available, but Hoover’s Jack Wells led the Vikings with 596. Only three 600 series were rolled in the boys division, with a high of 673.

The oil pattern was the 2023 OHSAA sectional and district pattern.

ASHLAND SWEEPS TITLES

COLUMBUS — Ashland’s boys and girls swept titles for the second straight week during the Holiday Baker Bash at Columbus Square Bowling Palace recently.

The top-seeded Arrows boys defeated No. 6 seed Sunbury Big Walnut 212-199 in Game 3 of the best-of-three Baker System finals to claim the title. The Arrows led the 16-game Baker System qualifying round with 3,343, finishing 126 pins ahead of Hilliard Davidson in the 29-team field.

In the girls division, Ashland swept past No. 6 seed Columbus South 159-125 and 164-134 to claim the title. The Arrows were the qualifying leaders with 2,879, finishing 32 pins ahead of Gahanna Lincoln.

OTHER TOURNEYS

* At Buckeye Lanes in North Olmsted, Cleveland St. Ignatius’ boys and Amherst Steele’s girls captured titles at the Eagle Challenge, a 16-game Baker System event over four rounds. The Wildcats put a five-game streak of 268-215-225-245-267 between rounds three and four to claim the title with 3,350, with Olmsted Falls second (3,150) and Steele third (3,142). Steele’s girls finished with 2,754 to take that title, followed by Akron Springfield (2,692) and North Olmsted (2,548).
