Tourney report: Watson claims OMT title in Columbus

COLUMBUS — Brent Watson topped Kirby Allen 236-214 to claim the title in the Ohio Matchplay tournaments Christmas Shootout recently at HP Lanes.

Watson was the No 3 seed after finishing with 1,228 total pinfall over the five qualifying games while Allen finished on top with 1,261.

The event drew 58 bowlers, with John Shreve Jr. rolling the high game of 295 in Game 2 of qualifying. Watson shot 770 over his first three games of the 12-player match-play round en route to the title match.

The next OMT event is the second annual Wayne Webb’s Green Machine Trios, which is a junior-junior-senior event for two players age 49 and under and one player age 50 and older. Entry feel is $240 for the 10 a.m. Dec. 30 event at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

Also, OMT will be holding its inaugural New Year’s Eve Challenge, set for 10 a.m. Dec. 31 at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus. That will be contested on the Ohio Matchplay 37-foot pattern, with a $110 entry fee for players age 50-and-older.

HIT DEM POCKETS:  Hit Dem Pockets will hold its ninth annual MLK Tournament Jan. 13, 14 and 15 at AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn. There are four shifts set each day for the handicap event, which will include singles and doubles. Entry fees are $45 for singles, $90 per team for doubles and mixed doubles, with a $10 bonus for senior, ladies and scratch singles. First place will pay $1,000 for handicap singles, and $2,000 each for handicap open and mixed doubles, based on 100 entries per event. For information, go to the group’s Facebook page at:

TRIWAY LANES: Vince Yoder captured the recent four0-game sweeper at Triway Lane with 1,015, with Bobby Wenger finishing second (965) in the 20-player field.

NAGLE MEMORIAL: The Ted Nagle Memorial Tournament is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 17 at Christopher Columbus Lanes in Alliance. Entry fee is $65, with bowlers rolling six qualifying games before the field is cut to the top five for the stepladder finals. For information, contact Chris Miller, Jason Worley or the center.

LEGACY LANES: Kevin Kittell captured first place in the 9-pin No Tap Sweeper recently which saw 67 bowlers battling it out across four games for one of five spots in the stepladder finals. In the finals round, third seed Kittell won all of his matches to take first place, which included a $200 bonus from tournament sponsor. The remainder of the top five were Tim Jensen, Blaine Salsberry, Mike Moats and Mike Stein.

CLUTCH LANES: Clutch Lanes and Sports Center will hold its 25th annual Holiday Scratch Classic at 10 a.m. Dec. 24 at the center in Cuyahoga Falls. Entry fee is $70 pre-pay and $80 the day of the event with bowlers rolling four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top 16 for single-game elimination match play by seed. KLONOWSKI MEMORIAL: The 32nd annual John Klonowski Memorial Scratch Singles is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 4 at Eastbury Bowling Center in Canton. Several changes have been made to the event this season, which has an entry fee of $120. See more on the event here:
