CANTON — Shaun Cheezan’s grandmother, Maria Cheezan, decided to come out that Monday night to watch him bowl at Eastbury Bowling Center.
“She has never seen my brother (Danny) or me throw either a 300 or 800,” the 41-year-old Canton right-hander said. “My brother doesn’t have an 800.”
Cheezan gave her a treat during the Monday Nite Mixed League.
Using his Storm Nova all night, the assembler for Allen Aircraft Products Inc. in Ravenna had games of 279, 248 and 279 for 806 — his career high and second 800 series (802 was the other two years ago).
There was some disappointment in Game 1 when Cheezan, who has seven career 300 games, had the first nine strikes before leaving a 4-pin on his first ball in the 10th frame.
“That was disappointing. I wanted that one, but I had to keep on going,” said Cheezan, who bowls in two leagues, both at Eastbury.
Cheezan doesn’t remember much about Game 2 except that he had one four-strike run.
“I know I started with a 10-pin spare. I might have had a hole … I don’t really remember,” Cheezan added.
But he remembers everything about his final run in Game 3 to 800.
“I knew what I needed to get there,” Cheezan said of a potential 800, “and I started with the front seven before leaving another 4-pin.”
Cheezan knew that 279 — for a second time — was the magic number to reach his goal.
After a strike in the ninth, he delivered on the first one in the 10th.
“I knew I had to have the first two. After I threw the first one, I was real nervous going up for the second one,” Cheezan said. “It came up a little heavy, but it tripped everything out. The last one, I was really relaxed and threw another pocket shot to get it.”
Cheezan said there was a different feeling for his second 800.
“The last time, I didn’t have the big runs like this one. I had a 285 and a 258 in there,” said Cheezan, who says he’s not a “numbers” guy when it comes to his target area.
“I started the first game and felt good. I just tried to stay focused going out,” he added. “I was probably throwing the ball out to about eight (board) and it was coming back. I knew after the spare in Game 3 I had to take it out.”
Cheezan, who is averaging 210 and 219 in his two Eastbury leagues, said his season is going well.
“Overall, I’m happy with my game right now,” he added.
And grandma was happy to see her grandson reach a milesstone.
REPEATING 800
- After shooting his first career 800 earlier this season, Canton McKinley High School graduate Andrew Fraleigh had his second — and made it memorable. The two-handed righty shot a triplicate 279 for an 837 series using his Roto Grip Gem at Rollhouse Parma.
- North Canton left-handed senior player Gary Brobson also earned his second 800 of the season, shooting 299 en route to 813 in the Liberty Vending league at Eastbury Bowling Center on the Friday before Christmas. The 63-year-old had 815 earlier this season in a mixed league also at Eastbury.
