Tourney report: HDP holds first major of season in Parma

PARMA — Hit Dem Pockets has its first major event of the season set this weekend at Freeway Lanes and Rollhouse Parma.

Also, coming up in June, HDP has more events scheduled:

The group also has announced the dates for its Christmas in July tournament. It will be held July 6, 7, 13 and 14 at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. This is a handicap event, with competition in seven divisions, including seniors, mixed and ladies. Two shifts will be held per day. See the Facebook page for more information.

IRON SHARPENS IRON: The first Iron Sharpens Iron summer tournament series event was held Friday at Roseland Lanes with top qualifier Kyle Brooks claiming the win by one pin over No. 2 seed Mark Walters on the Badger oil pattern. Others in the top five (after qualifying) included Andrew Fraleigh at plus-119, and a tie between Jesse Gonzales and Josh Maslanich at plus-73. Anthony Doran earned the final cash spot at plus-61. The event drew 24 bowlers. The next event is set for 7 p.m. May 31 also at Roseland and will be bowled on the PBA Wolf oil pattern. Entry fee is $50. ASHLAND VS. WOOSTER: The annual Ashland vs. Wooster Drive Inn Cup event is set for 8 a.m. May 25 at Triway Lanes in Wooster. The competition pits teams from Luray and Triway lanes in doubles, singles and Baker System events. Representing Team Triway are Gordon Jackson, Matt Griffin, Matt Coffelt, Ryan Merckle, Chris Steele, Rod Kurjian, Joe Horvatich, Karlie Way, Wash Haney and Nick Patterson. Bowling for Team Luray are Paul Blair, Gilbert Dudley, Scott Conard, Jordan Blair, Cassidy Schaub, Jeff Callahan, I’m Brown, Chris Rine, Michael Stanford and Brandon Harris. 

MEGA EVENTS  The $10,000 HP Lanes MEGA event is set for June 8 and 9 at HP Lanes in Columbus with a $300 entry fee. Bowlers will roll eight-game qualifying shifts at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. June 8 before the field is cut to the top 1 in 5 for the Cashers Round on Sunday at 10 a.m., with six more games bowled. The field is then cut to the top eight for a modified stepladder finals. There also is an option doubles event set for 7 p.m. June 7 at HP Lanes with a $200 entry fee. HILES TOURNAMENTS: The fourth annual Pittsburgh Open is set for May 25-26 at Meadows Lanes inside Hollywood Casino in Washington, Pa. Entry fee is $75 for the handicapped event, with five squads set over two days and the finals set for May 26 at 7 p.m. Bowlers bowl four qualifying games with six bowlers from each squad making the finals. OHIO MASTERS: The 2024 Bowler X Ohio Masters will be held Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at Eastbury Bowling Center in Canton. The event is open only to adult bowlers sanctioned in Ohio. No youth bowlers are permitted to enter. Entry fee is $100. Bowlers will bowl five qualifying games beginning at 11 a.m. Aug. 31. The field then will be cut to the top 50 percent of the field, which will bowl five additional games at 5:30 p.m. with pins from the early block carrying over. The field then will be cut again to the top 32 (based on 120 entries) for single-elimination, two-game match play by seed until a champion is declared. The field is limited to 128 players.
