Bowling notebook: Stark senior travel league needs players

snieronbowling.com

CANTON — With the 2024-25 fall-winter bowling season approaching, the Ellsworth Auto Body Senior Traveling League is looking for players.

“Right now, we have about seven openings,” league president Jose Rante said of the 12-team league, which has operated for around 30 years in Stark County.

Currently, the league bowls at four centers between Stark and Summit counties — Park Centre, Eastbury, AMF Hall of Fame and Spins Bowl Akron — with a $20 weekly fee. Bowlers must be ages 55 or older to participate.

“Several teams have lost players, and we really don’t have any possible subs at this point,” Rante said.

The league has adjusted its starting time to 11 a.m. on Thursdays, with the day being adjusted to Tuesdays whenever it bowls at Eastbury.

The league faced similar problems when it returned to active play following the outbreak of COVID-19, when it had to suspend activities.

Rante said there have been discussions about moving to four-player rosters as one solution, and he has consulted with team captains about that possibility due to the need for players.

The league meeting is set for noon Sept. 12 at Park Centre Lanes, with the league starting Sept. 26.

HALL OF FAME DINNER APPROACHING

CANTON — The Stark County USBC will be inducting a six-person class — three women and three men — into its Hall of Fame for 2024.

This will mark the second class inducted since the merger of the Greater Canton Bowling Association and the Canton Women’s Bowling Association.

The three female inductees, all in the Superior Performance category, are the late Helen Radtke of Massillon, and Jossett Petrick and Candace (Candy) Dorosky, both of Canton.

The male inductees, also in the Superior Performance category, include Navarre’s Franklin Showalter Jr., Canton’s Jeff A. Mowls and Columbiana’s Lou Petit II.

The six officially will be enshrined during the Hall of Fame Recognition Dinner, set for 5 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Hilton Double Tree in downtown Canton.

In addition to the bowling honorees, a new hall of fame class in fumbleball will be inducted. Those inductees include Dayton C. Walters, Michael Guarendi, Ben Miller, Mark Lux and Greg Perez.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased by contacting Jose Rante at (330) 323-5330.
