College bowling: Walsh, Robert Morris top Muskie Mash fields

COSHOCTON — The Walsh University women and Robert Morris men emerged with titles during the Muskie Mash college bowling tournament last weekend at Legacy Lanes and Lounge.

Walsh, which finished with 4,418, finished just 11 pins ahead of second-place Muskingum (4,407), followed by Baldwin-Wallace (4,266) in the 11-team women’s field.

Walsh’s Kendall Scharr was the top women’s individual, averaging 212.2 with 1,061 total pinfall. Other top Cavaliers included Tara Oberlin (883), Andrea Guzowski (842) and Rachel Young (833) during the five-game individual qualifier.

In the men’s division, Robert Morris finished with 4,609 to top the field, followed by Walsh (4,449) and Muskingum (4,358) in the 10-team field.

Individually, Robert Morris’ Clay Thomas (1,011) and Max Munich (1,000) led the field. High for Walsh was Nicholas Fortunato (912) and Robert Komlosi (911).

JAYHAWK HIGHLIGHTS SCHEDULE

The 2024-2025 United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season marched on this past weekend with 14 events around the country, highlighted by the Jayhawk Collegiate Challenge in Topeka, Kan.

Fifteen men’s varsity teams and 12 women’s varsity teams competed at the Jayhawk, where teams bowled five individual games and 16 Baker games before the top eight teams in each division moved on to best-of-three bracket match play.

By the end of match play, the Wichita State men and Baker women were the final two teams standing and left Topeka as tournament champions.

Wichita State qualified as the top seed for the bracket and defeated No. 8 Saint Mary (2-0) and No. 4 Ottawa-Kansas (2.5-1.5) before facing No. 2 Newman in the title match. The Shockers never let up in the title match, shooting 228-200 to Newman’s 200-194 to claim the victory.

Wichita State also had three bowlers in the top five for individuals, with Broox Golden leading the entire men’s field with a five-game total of 1,157. Traeten Henrichsmeyer was third with 1,113 and Carter Street finished fifth with 1,081. Lindenwood’s Michael Anderson was second (1,120) while Newman’s Liam Hardman was fourth (1,095).

On the women’s side, Baker qualified as the No. 4 seed and faced Culver-Stockton in the first round. Baker needed all three games to advance to the next round against top qualifier Lindenwood. In another match that went the distance, Baker prevailed and bowled Columbia in the championship match. This time, Baker only needed two games, shooting 212-174 to Columbia’s 201-135 for the win.

Lindenwood’s Elizabeth Rittenour and Madison Millsaps were the top two bowlers for individuals, shooting 1,025 and 986, respectively. Ottawa-Kansas’ Holly Bridges (976), Morningside’s Emaly Kruse (974) and Culver-Stockton’s Rachel Moore (969) also finished in the top five.

* At the Boilermaker Classic and Boilermaker Baker Shootout in Lafayette, Ind., the Marian-Indiana men and Judson women collected two wins for the weekend.

* At the Mid-South Conference Brandon Burns Memorial and Greater Nashville Open in Smyrna, Tenn., the Pikeville women won both events, while the Milligan men won the Greater Nashville Open and Pikeville men won the Brandon Burns Memorial.

* At the Dezy Strong Classic in Staten Island, N.Y., the Monmouth women went 5-0 in Baker matches to win.

* At the Eastern Intercollegiate Bowling Tournament (EIBT) Event 2 in Aberdeen, N.J., the SUNY-Stony Brook men left with a victory.

* At the Ebonite Hawks Soar Higher Open in Manchester, N.H., the Fairleigh Dickinson women won in seven games during the championship match against Merrimack to record the victory.

* At the Southern Queens in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Alabama-Birmingham women won over Sam Houston State in the title match.

* At the Valpo Classic in Dyer, Ind., the Wisconsin-Whitewater women notched a win after defeating Maryland Eastern Shore in the final match.

*At the Virginia Union Invitational in Midlothian, Va., the Alabama A&M women defeated Fayetteville State to win the event.

* At the Great Lakes Bowling Conference (GLBC) Event 2 in Green Bay, Wis., the Marian-Wisconsin men and women left with conference wins.
