H.S. bowling: SCHSBC players of week, statistics; weekend tournament report

The Stark County High School Bowling Conference announced its players of the week for Week 3 of the 2024-25 high school bowling season.

The honorees were Central Catholic’s Logan Gawlak and Lake’s Zachary Abbott, a pair of seniors.

BOYS

LOGAN GAWLAK

Gawlak, a senior for Central Catholic, shot 209 and 235 for a 444 series in a match at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes. Here is background on Gawlak:

What do you like best about bowling? Bowling with my teammates and socializing.

Favorite band/singer? Trivium

Favorite school subject? Science

Favorite teacher? Lane Knore

What coach had to say: “Logan has been one of my most consistent bowlers ever since he joined the team as a freshman. Now, he’s a leader and the other bowlers really look to him for guidance. ZACHARY ABBOTT

A senior, Abbott is averaging 212 this season and b owned a 279-256 for a 535 series against Green at Park Centre Lanes. He is a three-year first-team all-conference selection. Here is background on Abbott:

He will have a great year. He has figured out Park Centre by using some new balls that match up well. He also is coachable even with all that talent.” — Jeff Mowls

Here are individual statistics from the Stark County High School Bowling Conference following Week 3 of the 2024-25 season as provided by the conference:

TOURNAMENT REPORT

Mount Pleasant’s boys and Hilliard  Bradley’s girls captured titles during the inaugural Capital Classic held Saturday at HP Lanes in Columbus. The event drew 22 boys and 21 girls teams, with all teams rolling three regular games and six Baker System games before the respective fields were cut for best-of-three Baker match play.

In the boys division, Marion Pleasant, the No. 2 seed, topped No. 1 seed Ashland 2-1 in the title match, winning Game 3 204-169.

Ashland finished qualifying with 4,329 total pinfall, 31 pins ahead of Marion Pleasant.

Individually, Ashland Max Oaken led the field with 714, followed by St. Marys Memorial’s Aiden Thieman (649) and the Arrows’ Landon Dreibelbis (647).

In the girls division, Bradley stopped Whitehall 2-1, winning Game 3 207-157. St. Marys Memorial was the top seed with 3,277, followed by Wilmington (3,163). Bradley was the No. 6 seed.

Individually for the girls, St. Marys Memorial’s Kaleigh Caywood led the field with 576, followed by Wilmington’s Kylie Fisher (551) and Ashland’s Haley Rowe and Butler’s Sage Malott (544).

PIONEER BAKER BASH

In the Pioneer Baker Bash at Columbus Square Bowling Palace in Columbus, 28 boys teams and 22 girls teams rolled 16 Baker System games before the respective fields were cut to the final eight for best-of-three match play by seed.

The Gahanna Lincoln boys and girls came away with titles, with the boys stopping Hilliard Davidson 2-0 and the girls defeating Miamisburg 2-0.

Canton McKinley’s boys and girls both made the cut, with the Bulldogs boys finishing eighth and the girls taking sixth in their fields.

RAIDER COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE

In the Raider Challenge at Poelking Woodman Lanes in Kettering, teams bowled two regular games and eight Baker games until the respective boys and girls fields were broken down to the top eight for elimination round play. There were 18 boys and 17 girls teams in the field.

Claiming titles were Kettering Fairmont’s boys, who defeated Lima Senior, and Magnificat’s girls, who defeated Fairmont.

WESTLAKE DEMON CLASSIC

Sunday’s Westlake Demon Classic at Yorktown Lanes drew 19 boys and 16 girls teams, with all teams rolling three regular games and six Baker games to determine the champions.

In the boys division, Mentor topped the field with 4,015, followed by Cleveland St. Ignatius (3,986) and GlenOak 3,953. Fairport Harbor Harding won the girls division with 3,577, followed by Magnificat (3,425) and GlenOak (3,189).
