H.S. bowling: Fields are set for NE Ohio boys, girls districts

The OHSAA Northeast District Division I high school bowling tournaments are set for Feb. 23 (boys) and 24 at Roseland Lanes in Oakwood.

The boys field will feature 20 teams with 19 competing in the girls division, with the same number of individuals also seeking berths.

The top five girls and boys teams and five individuals in each division who are not members of advancing teams will earn berths in the state championships, set for March 7 and 8 at HP Lanes in Columbus.

Other sectional events were held last weekend around the district. Here are those results:

CLEVELAND DIVISION I

Boys: Cleveland St. Ignatius rolled to the sectional title at Wickliffe Lanes, finishing with 4,345 total pinfall in the 12-team field, including shooting 1,119 in Game 3 and 1,202 during Baker System games to lead three district qualifiers. Other advancers were Lakeside (3,822) and Mentor (3,726), which finished 294 pins ahead of Eastlake North for the final spot. The Wildcats’ Mason Melgaard topped individuals with a 678 series. Individual qualifiers include Euclid’s Michael Malinowski (677), North’s Colin Hutson (618) and Bedford’s Daniel Bridgeforth (591).

Girls: Eastlake North topped an eight-team field to lead three district qualifiers in this division with 3,207. Other qualifiers were Mentor (2,960) and St. Joseph Academy (2,675), which earned the final spot by 57 pins over Euclid. Euclid’s Shamaiia Emery led individuals and was the top individual qualifier with 608 — the lone 600 series. Other individual qualifiers were Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s Josephine Mislay (507) and Lakeside’s Asa Enos (487).

STRUTHERS DIVISION I

Boys: Boardman rolled to the sectional title in a 17-team field at Holiday Bowl, finishing with three 1,000 games and 4,594 total pinfall to lead five district qualifiers. Others advancing are Ravenna (4,122), Twinsburg (4,013), Stow-Munroe Falls (3,841) and Austintown Fitch (3,827), finishing 70 pins ahead of Kent Roosevelt. Boardman’s Austin Rule and Chase Realty went 1-2 individually with 739 and 703, respectively. Individual qualifiers include Kenston’s Trevor Stretch (666), Salem’s Donal Blackburn (650) and Keegan Sommers (644), Kent Roosevelt’s Braden Latacki (650) and Streetsboro’s Connor Stevens (644).

Girls: Defending state champion Boardman topped this sectional at Holiday Bowl with 3,976, leading four district qualifiers. Others advancing are 2023 champion Nordonia (3,682), Austintown Fitch (3,188) and Howland (3,179), which finished just seven pins ahead of Hudson for the final spot. Boardman’s Kaitlyn Greenaway and Marissa Funk went 1-2 individually with 673 and 652, respectively, with Nordonia’s Grace Bzdafka (602) and Kaitlyn McNutt (572) finishing third and fourth, respectively. Individual qualifiers include Hudson’s Sydney Gallegos (528), Twinsburg’s Zia Nally (500), Stow-Munroe Falls’ Olivia Janka (478) and Salem’s Kylie Smith (474).

LORAIN DIVISION I

Boys: Olmsted Falls leads four district qualifiers from Rebman Lanes, shooting three 1,000 games for 4,437 total pinfall. Other advancers are North Ridgeville (4,410), Amherst Steele (4,104) and Lakewood St. Edward (4,046), which finished 30 pins ahead of Parma Padua Franciscan. In the 15-team field. North Ridgeville’s Jakob Holland was the top individual with 719. Individual qualifiers include Padua’s Zachary Mayne (712), Avon’s Bennett Ernst (650), North Royalton’s Nolan Becker (627) and Brecksville-Broadview Heights’ Zak Kuscevic (622).

Girls: Magnificat topped a 14-team field at Rebman Lanes with 3,535. Also advancing are North Ridgeville (3,418), North Olmsted (3,283) and Midview (3,283), which finished 23 pins ahead of Amherst Steele. Magnificat’s Dot Sayles was the top individual with 594. Individual qualifiers include Steele’s Sophia Chapman (549), Padua’s Olivia Hanna (527), Olmsted Falls’ Madilyn Drespling (522) and North Royalty’s Angela Armbruster (519).
