CANTON — No. 6 seed Chase Barstow earned his first College Bowl Tournaments series singles victory Saturday, topping No. 4 seed Dell Ray 278-232 in the title match at Eastbury Bowling Center.
The 21-year-old Louisville two-handed righty stopped Canton lefty Alex McCourry 248-223 in the semifinals to reach the title match. Barstow finished qualifying with 969 total pinfall (242.25 average).
Ray, who shot one of the three 300s during the event in Game 1, defeated No. 1 seed Ray Cook of Akron 257-255 to advance. The other 300s came from Derrick Simon in Game 1 and McCourry during the quarterfinal match-play round, ironically against his brother, Brett.
The tournament drew a series-record field of 66 players, with the top eight advancing to single-game match-play rounds by seed. First place was worth $750.
It marked Barstow’s second series win overall after teaming with former Walsh University teammate Jordan Norris to capture a doubles event also at Eastbury.
Cook finished as the No. 1 seed with 1,051 total pinfall (262.75 average) on the Eastbury house oil pattern, just one pin ahead of McCourry. Four players shot 1,000 or better during qualifying.
Massillon’s Frank Testa was the cut to the top eight with 953, 10 pins ahead of Cody Peck. The tourney paid 20 spots, with Chris Simko and Eric Long tying for 19th with 914, two pins ahead of Ryan Suter.
