AKRON — Heading into the final weekend of the Ohio State USBC Open Championships, being conducted at AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn (team) and Station 300 (doubles and singles) there are new leaders in two divisions.
Beavercreek’s Chase Carter had games of 256, 279 and 280 for an 815 series — the first 800 shot during the Open’s nine-week run and the first honor score since March 9.
After shooting just 630 during doubles at Station 300, Carter switched to his Storm IQ Tour Ai in doubles and made a move inside for his 17th career 800 series.
Carter also moved up to fourth in all-events scratch.
Fairborn’s Dean Reynolds also has taken over the lead in scratch all-events with 2,099, three pins ahead of Lewis Center’s Cassidy Schaub.
The tournament begins its final weekend on Saturday.

STARK COUNTY USBC OPEN, WOMEN: The Stark County USBC Open and Women’s Championships continue Sunday with singles and doubles at Eastbury Bowling Center in Canton. The team event concluded Friday and we will publish results as we receive them. Entry fee for singles and doubles is $20 per event. Leaders heading into the final night of team action were South Point Shuffle in the Open division with 3,657 and Ten Back Babes among the women with 3,373. Four 300 games have been shot during team event, including Tony Godden, Rich Stoffer, Frank Testa and Jack Wells. There have been two 700s by women: Chelsea Dorosky (747) and Kara Kutz (727). FURBAY ELECTRIC OPEN: The annual Furbay Electric Open is set for 9 a.m. May 4 at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes in Canton with a field of 125 bowlers set. Tournament director Joe Altimore III said a maximum field of 138 players can participate, and he is asking all participants to arrive by 8 a.m. to determine numbers. Willowick’s Dean Vargo is the defending champion. Bowlers will roll five games on a difficult oil pattern before the field is cut to the top 20 for two-game match play by seed. After two more rounds, the top five advance to the single-game elimination stepladder finals. Entry fee is $80; first place paid $1,200 in 2024 with 107 entries. SCRATCH EXTRAVAGANZA: Openings remain for the 2025 $10,000 Added Spring Scratch Extravaganza, set for May 3 and 4 at Gilmore Lanes in Fairfield with a $100 entry fee and an $80 re-entry available. Bowlers will roll four qualifying games with 1-in-5 bowlers overall advancing to the Sunday’s cashers round, with no pins carrying over. COLLEGE BOWL TOURNAMENTS: Following an April cancellation, the final regular-season College Bowl Tournaments Series event will be a doubles at 10 a.m. May 10 at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes. Entry fee is $130, with teams bowling four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top four for single-elimination match play. This is the final opportunity for individuals to qualify for the series’ Season Finale, set for 10 a.m. May 31 at Park Centre Lanes. Bowlers must have bowled at least four series events to qualify for the finale. HIT DEM POCKETS: Hit Dem Pockets will hold its Masters Scratch Tournament at 10 a.m. May 24 at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. Entry fee is $140, with bowlers rolling eight qualifying games before the field is cut for bracket-style single-game eliminator match play. First place will be worth $2,500, based on 50 participants. LEGACY LANES: The team of Jason Sharier, Alex Griffith and Chris Miller captured the annual Trios event at Legacy Lanes and Lounge with 12 teams in the field. The threesome of Lindsey Jensen, Tim Jensen and Jeff Stevens was second followed by the trio of Tony Carson, Mike Burns and Karlie Way. HILES BOWLING TOURNAMENTS: The fifth annual Trio Baker Championships was held Saturday at Spins Bowl-Pittsburgh with 31 teams bowling 31 Baker games until the cut to the top five for the stepladder finals. The team o Adam Barta, Brian Waliczek and Dan Higgins emerged with the title. The group is bringing back its Mount Lebanon Summer Sport Shot Series to Mt. Lebanon Lanes in Pittsburgh. PBA QUALIFIER: Rebman Recreation in Lorain held its second PBA Qualifier on Sunday with 54 regular and 10 senior bowlers entering to earn free spots in the upcoming PBA Central Region tournaments at the center. A total of 11 regular and two PBA50 spots were awarded, with Alex Vencil topping the regular field with 1,104 total pinfall for five games. The cut spot was at 1,015. Tony Varn topped the senior division with 1,098, with Scott Ours earning the other spot with 1,006. The PBA Ohio Lottery/Baldo Campana and Ave D’Entremont Memorial Central Open is set for 9 a.m. May 17 at Rebman Recreation, with bowlers rolling an eight-game qualifying block before the field is cut to the top 16 for bracket match play at 2 p.m. A pro-am is set for 6 p.m. May 16 with a $25 entry fee. PBA REGIONAL: The PBA Lucky Strike-Fairlawn Central Open is set for May 10 at AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn. Players will bowl an eight-game block beginning at 8 a.m. before the field is cut for bracket match play. Players will be bowling on the Scorpion 44 oil pattern.
