HOUSTON – After two days of qualifying at the Professional Bowlers Association/Professional Women’s Bowling Association Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles, Frank and Jordan Snodgrass of Tipton, Mich., took the overall lead heading into Sunday’s semifinal round with a combined seven-game total of 3,150.
Frank led the Snodgrass duo, shooting 1,598 for his seven games while Jordan was not far behind with 1,552, where they narrowly took the lead from Andrew Anderson of Holly, Mich., and Erin McCarthy of Elkhorn, Neb., who finished Day 1 with 3,148 and go into the semifinal round in second after qualifying concluded.
The brother-sister duo of Nick Pate of Conway, S.C., and Lauren Russo of Ballwin, Mo., are third (3,099), Colombia’s Clara Guerrero and Ethan Fiore of Tampa, Fla., in fourth (3,073), while Malaysia’s Sin Li Jane and Darren Tang of Las Vegas close out in fifth (3,069).
Places sixth through 10th are as follows: Avery Domaguin of San Diego and Jake Peters of Henderson, Nev. (3,054); Colombia’s Juliana Botero and Alec Keplinger of Coldwater, Mich. (3,053); Nicollette Gaudette of Keller, Texas, and Deo Benard of Roanoke, Texas (3,020); Hope Gramly of Aubrey, Texas, and Kris Prather of Plainfield, Ill. (3,014); Crystal Elliott of Palm Bay, Fla., and Canada’s Francois Lavoie (3,010).
Brandon and Alexis Runk of Milton, Pa., were the final ones to make to the semifinal round with a 2,862 combined total.
The Snodgrass’ combined efforts on the lanes are a force to be reckoned with, but it’s Frank’s ability to keep the duo calm that elevates them when the lanes got tough during the last few games of qualifying.
This is the couple’s second year competing together, but their first with the same name on their jerseys after getting married last September.
“I would consider myself the psychiatrist,” Frank said. “She wants to strike every ball, which she can, and I try to help her see the picture so she has the best chance to strike.”
Jordan agreed, “I tend to get a little crazy sometimes but he’s the calming factor between the two of us.”
The last game of qualifying got dicey for the couple to see if they would finish as the leaders. It included a miscue for Jordan and a struggle to strike for both of them.
“It got a little frustrating to go from striking a bunch to not really striking at all,” said Jordan. “But I knew we just needed 400 (total pins) and that’s what we did to get the job done.”
“I feel like everybody has this stigma on bowling with husband and wife (teams), but I feel like we prove that you can do it. We can separate the relationship from the bowling aspect and that’s really hard to do sometimes, but I feel like we manage it pretty well.”
“She travels with me whenever I bowl, and I travel with her when she bowls,” Frank added, “We get an understanding of how each other are on the lanes while we’re bowling. Being able to pair that together makes it a lot easier.”
This year marks the tournament’s 25th anniversary. Since the first event in 2000, the X Out Breast Cancer Foundation has raised more than $1 million dollars in the fight against breast cancer.
The cause is extra special to Frank Snodgrass.
“This tournament means a lot to me. My mom passed away from breast cancer. This event holds a special place in my heart,” he said.
Four-time Luci champions Tommy Jones and Shannon Pluhowsky qualified 20th at +155.
EJ Tackett, who is in pursuit of the PBA’s single-season average record, and Diandra Asbaty are in 25th place at +121. The duo won the 2022 event. After a qualifying total of 1,462, Tackett will need to shoot at least 1,049 in the semifinals and 3,802 through the finals to regain control of the record.
Two-time defending champions Anthony Simonsen and Danielle McEwan sit in 28th place at +116.
The Snodgrass’ and the rest of the top 40 teams will return at 9 a.m. for four games in the semifinal round before another cut to the top 12 for round-robin match play at 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
All rounds will be live streamed on BowlTV.
