Tourney report: HDP sets handicap doubles return; area youth bowlers place in Great Lakes event

Hit Dem Pockets returns with its Sunday Handicap Doubles tournament, set for 5 p.m. Sept. 28 at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia.

Entry fee is $120 per team, with teams bowling five games, with teams cashing on a 1-in-6 ratio. There will also be a sixth game with the winners of the first five games competing for a winner-take-all additional prize.

COLLEGE BOWL TOURNAMENTS: The next College Bowl Tournaments series event is a over 50-under 50 doubles, set for 10 a.m. Oct. 18 at Eastbury Bowling Center. Entry fee is $130 per team, with teams bowling four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top four for single-game elimination match play by seed. This is a scratch event on a house oil pattern. Additional cash spots will be determined by the amount of players in the field. MIDWEST SCRATCH BOWLING SERIES: The Midwest Scratch Bowling Series’ Free Lineage Akron House Shot Baker Doubles, which was set for Sept. 27 at Station 300 in Akron, has been canceled due to lack of entries.

SINGLES ELIMINATOR: Jody Boyd and James Dalton Hiles are teaming up for the $1,000 Singles Eliminator event, with the date being changed from the original one due to a conflict with an Ohio State football home game. The new date is 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus. Entry fee is $80 on a house oil pattern, with as maximum field of 120. Bowlers will bowl either four or five games (to be announced) before the field is cut to the top 24 for eliminator rounds, with the top eight receiving a first-round bye. For information, go to:

HILES TOURNAMENTS: Limited openings remain for the Castaway Trio Baker Classic at 10 a.m. Oct. 19 at Eastway Lanes in Erie, Pa. Entry fee is $300 per team, with teams bowling 18 Baker games before the field is cut to the top five for the stepladder finals. In addition, the fifth annual Baker Team Championship is set for 9 a.m. Sept. 27 at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes in Pittsburgh with limited spots remaining. PORTAGE USBC: The 79th annual Portage County Open is set for Oct. 4 through 19 at Spins Bowl Kent and will be bowled on a house oil pattern. LEGACY LANES: Legacy Lanes and Lounge will be holding a doubles handicap sweeper at 1 p.m. Oct. 12 with a $80 entry fee per team. MIXED MASTERS: The Steel Valley Bowling Committee will holding a handicapped Mixed Masters tournament Oct. 4 and 5 in Warren. Entry fee is $125 per team. The first four-game qualifying round is set for noon Oct. 4 at Freeway Lanes, with the second qualifying round set for 11 a.m. Oct. 5 at Champion Lanes. PBA REGIONALS

CENTRAL REGION: Evan Genz earned his first PBA regional title Sunday during the PBA Boss Snow Plows-OBrien Auto Central Open at PinHeads in Fishers, Ind. Genz defeated Michael Schlabach 2-0 in the best-of-three title match, shooting 213 and 177 to the latter’s 203 and 171. Genz stopped Zach Weidman 2-0 in the best-of-three semifinals while Schlabach advanced with a 2-0 win over Jean Perez. Weidman was the No. 1 qualifier after averaging 228 and finishing with 1,854 total pinfall in the 40-player field,  four pins ahead of Parma’s Patrick Dombrowski. The top 12 advanced to match play, with the top four receiving first-round byes. The top three finishers land spots in the senior Regional Players Invitational. The field will bowl eight qualifying games Saturday at 1 p.m., with the top 1-in-3 advancing to Sunday’s four-game cashers round at 10 a.m., followed by round-robin match play for the top eight.

SOUTHERN REGION: Victor Florie Jr. stopped Tom Hess 248-178 to capture the PBA50 Greater Nashville Super Regional on Sunday at Smyrna Bowling Center in Smyrna, Tenn. Florie defeated Michael Sealy 2-1 in a best-of-three semifinal match, winning 215-214 in Game 3. Hess stopped Mark Clark 215-202 in the other semifinal. Lewis Center’s Dan Higgins Jr. finished seventh overall. Florie was the No. 5 seed after the eight-game qualifier, which was led by Sealy with 1,810 total pinfall. * Park Centre Lanes in North Canton again will be sponsoring the PBA50-60 Park Centre Lanes Central Doubles Open on Oct. 18 and 19 at the center. In conjunction with the event, the Fred Smith- Dick Behra Pro-Am will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17. Players will have the opportunity to bowl three games of 9-pin, no-tap with three different pros. This is a handicapped event. Entry fee is $30 per players,, and it is open to high school, collegiate, adult, seniors (ages 50 and older) and special needs players. YOUTH EVENTS

GREAT LAKES JUNIOR TOUR: The Great Lakes Junior Gold Tour was at Castaway Lakes in Erie, Pa., last weekend, with several area players making cuts in the event, bowled on the 2023 USBC Junior Gold Qualifying pattern. Cuyahoga Falls’ Jonathan Rasch shot 491 during Round 3 to top the 18U division. Bowlers rolled seven qualifying games before the cut to the second round of four more games. That field was then cut again for two more games to determine the champions. Fairport Harbor’s Eddie Krofcheck finished second with 432 the final round. Perry Township’s Arielle Clapper finished second in the girls 18U division with 335 the final round, with Erie’s Taylor Kretz taking hours with 375. Jackson Township’s Rylee Dunn made the cut to Round 2, but did not make the final four.
