AKRON — With senior right-hander Aubrey Reuter shooting a 269 in Game 2, Medina Buckeye opened up a big lead after topping the field by just five pins en route capturing the Summit Division I girls sectional high school bowling tournament Monday at Spins Bowl Akron.
Buckeye finished with 3,443 total pinfall, taking the sectional title by 119 pins over second-place Akron Hoban (3,324).
Reuter won the individual title by 70 pins, finishing with 630 after running off eight straight strikes to start Game 2. The Bucks had two other players finish among the top seven — freshman Riley Onyx (513) and senior Leah Kaczmarski (500).
The tourney will send five teams and five individuals who are not members of advancing teams to the 10 a.m. Feb. 23 Northeast District at Rebman Recreation in Lorain. There were 17 teams and one individual in Monday’s field.
Other qualifying teams included Walsh Jesuit (3,183), Akron Firestone (2,879) and Norton (2,812), which earned the final spot by 49 pins over Akron Ellet (2,763). The top five did not change the entire tournament except for some repositioning.
Senior Dani Ferre led Hoban with a 537 series. Sectional runner-up and junior Marley Draft (560), junior Samantha Lisle (468) and sophomore Kailynn Simonetti (467) led Walsh Jesuit while a pair of seniors — Samantha Clason (481) and Jenna Higgins (479) — led Norton.
Junior Aubrey Caulder, who finished third individually, led Firestone with 540.
The format was three regular games and six Baker System games on the OHSAA sectional-district oil pattern. Teams bowled on the high side of the two-sided center.
Field junior Makayla Doak was the top individual qualifier with 526. She will be joined by two-time state qualifier and junior Gracie Dunne of Highland (482), who bowled as an individual after bowling the entire season with the boys team; Ellet junior Danni Mancino (470); Copley senior Autumn Garber (456); and Akron North senior Pasha Rai (428), who earned the final spot by five pins.
High team game went to Buckeye with 875 in Game 2, with only five 800s shot on the day. Buckeye also posted the high Baker series with 992 (165.3), with Hoban posting the high game of 196.
