Bowling briefs: Mowls takes third at senior event

After being the top qualifer, Stark County resident Jeff Mowls finished third during Sunday’s Senior Singles Open event at ThunderBowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich.

Mowls finished the six-game qualifier with 1,524 total pinfall to lead the 114-player field in the regular 50 and older division. The left-hander had games of 256, 237, 226 and 197 in the match-play round after the field was cut to the top 28 before falling in round four.

A pair of Super Seniors, Rick Wayne and Jerry Sikora, battled for the title with Wayne winning 267-255 in the title match to earn $1,200.

Mowls is the girls coach at Lake High School.

SUMMIT USBC TOURNEYS SET

The 2022 Summit County USBC Open, Women’s, and Seniors Tournaments are fast approaching.  All of the tournaments will be held at North Woods Lanes the weekends of February 19-20 and 26-27, and March 5-6.  All singles shifts will be at 8:30 a.m. each day, all doubles shifts will be at 11 a.m. each day, and all team shifts will be at 2 p.m. each day. 

New this year, Summit has partnered with USBC for online tournament registration.  North Woods Lanes has 24 lanes and the committee is expecting a large turnout, so register early and lock in a spot.  The link to the USBC tournament portal may be accessed on the Summit USBC website at the link below:

The advance entry fee for the Open and Women’s tournaments is $20 and payment must be made in the portal.  The portal will close for advance entries on Feb. 13.  All bowlers registered by Feb. 13 will be eligible for a ball raffle the day of bowling.  After Feb. 13, the entry fee goes up to $25 per event and entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Seniors tournament entries will not be accepted in advance.  Entry forms will be available the day of the tournament.  Seniors Tournament entry fees are $10 per event and will use scores from either the Open or Women’s events.

GRAN EXCELS IN FLORIDA

Former Hartville resident Dick Gran put on a show during the Florida State Tournament at Spring Hill Lanes in Spring Hill, Fla.

Gran, bowling in the doubles event with partner Doug Becker, had games of 280, 300 and 249 for an 829 series.

Gran is a regular on the PBA50 Tour.
