Division II sectional: Carrollton tops East boys sectional

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Carrollton led the field as three Stark County Conference teams topped the final standings during Tuesday’s East Division II boys sectional at St. Clair Lanes.

The Warriors took the overall lead in Game 2 of the three-game opening round and finished with 4,041 total pinfall. The format included three regular games followed by six Baker System games.

Minerva finished second with 3,998, 43 pins behind Carrollton, and Conotton Valley was third at 3,943. Conotton Valley turned in the top Baker System series of 1,180 — one pin ahead of the Lions.

Other teams advancing included East Liverpool (3,936), Garaway (3,585) and Beaver Local (3,456), which finished just four pins ahead of Union Local for the final qualifying spot.

The top six teams and top six individuals who are not members of advancing teams move on to the East District, which is set for noon Feb. 24 at Legacy Lanes in Coshocton.

There were 22 teams in the sectional field, bowling in two shifts. The top three teams came out of the afternoon shift.

Carrollton junior Brant George was the top individual with a 659 series to lead the Warriors, with freshman Bryce Taylor finishing eighth with a 609.

The Rockets had a pair of bowlers finish in the top four — junior Robert Myer (647) and sophomore Bobby Brennan (639).

Minerva was led by seniors Cameron Mayle (617) and Ahydyn Lautzenheiser (588), who finished seventh and 14th, respectively. Senior Clayton Burky led the Pirates with a 641 series.

Individuals advancing included St. Clairsville’s Charles Anderson (603), Buckeye Local’s Jimmy Hornyak (601), Martins Ferry’s Jackson Romshak (595), Barnesville’s Matt Hall (594) and Braydon Daugherty (570) and Bridgeport’s Gabe Donahue (574).

Among other area teams not making the cut to district were Tuscarawas Central Catholic (14th, 3,145), Sandy Valley (16th, 3,078), Indian Valley (17th, 3,028) and Claymont (18th, 3,005).

The Division II girls sectional is Feb. 16 at Boulevard Lanes in New Philadelphia, with shifts at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

CENTRAL GIRLS SET RECORDS

Central Catholic’s girls team, which earned a Division II district spot Monday in the Tri-County sectional, set two school records Tuesday during a match against Jackson at Strike Zone.

The Crusaders broke their match record set one week ago by eight pins with a 2,488 match total, a single-game school record of 949 and a two-game record of 1,829.

In addition, senior Alina Stebbins set a school record with a 279 game while just missing her school record for series with a 501. She holds the mark of 508.
