Area bowling briefs: Tri-County Masters down to final 32

WOOSTER — Johnstown right-hander Jordan Ventresco opened his five-game qualifier with 288 and held on to gain the No. 1 seed during the 2022 Tri-County Masters on Sunday at Triway Lanes.

Ventresco finished with 1,265 total pinfall, finishing just three pins ahead of Manfield’s Bob VanRiper (1,262), with Brandon Harris holding the third spot at 1,229.

The top 32 players return at 10 a.m. Sunday for the match-play finals. Players will bowl single-game matches until a champion is declared.

Area players reaching the top 32 include Ray Cook (eighth, 1,199), Vince Yoder (11th, 1,185), Dave McLaughlin (12th, 1,179), Branden Ball (14th, 1,175), Jody Boyd (15th, 1,173), J.D. Jones (18th, 1,158), Bobby Wenger (19th, 1,152), Brian Ball (20th, 1,151), Tony Carson (23rd, 1,144) and Mike Emerick (32nd, 1,127), who got the final match-play spot by just three pins over Jonathan Myers in the 95-player field.

Mike Eichenberry had the tourney’s lone 300 game in Game 5, while Branden Ball shot 299 in Game 4.

HIGH SCHOOL: WOOSTER BOYS CLAIM OCC TITLE

WOOSTER — The Wooster High School boys, second seeded entering the bracket finals, defeated No. 1 seed Ashland to claim the Ohio Cardinal Conference title at Triway Lanes.

The Generals, who rolled a 252 Baker System game in its final game of the qualifying round, topped the Arrows 3-2 in the best-of-five Baker match-play finals, including winning a two-frame rolloff following a 189-189 tie in Game 4. Wooster won the final Baker game 214-202 to claim the title.

Ashland topped the qualifying round of three regular games and six Baker games with 4,543 total pinfall, including a school-record 1,234 in Game 2. Wooster finished with 4,128.

Ashland’s Parker Grissinger led the individuals with a 696 series and teammates Matthias Wood (688) and Zion Caudill (686) finished second and third, respectively.

Seth Opatz was high for Wooster with 656 and Dawson Gaynor added 621.

The second-seeded Wooster girls also advanced to the finals against No. 1 Ashland, but fell 3-1 in the title match.

Ashland finished with 3,680 total pinfall, with the Generals at 3,568.

Wooster’s Abbie Leiendecker was the top individual with a 669 series, 110 pins ahead of Ashland runner-up Emma Barger (559). Wooster’s Rebecca Stinchcomb also added 544.

HIGH SCHOOL: CUYAHOGA FALLS, NORDONIA CAPTURE SUBURBAN TITLES

NORTON — The Cuyahoga Falls boys and Nordonia girls captured titles during the Suburban League Postseason Tournament held recently at Charger Lanes.

The Tigers finished with 4,229 total pinfall, including a tourney high 1,018 in Baker System games, to finish 220 pins ahead of second-place Stow (4,009).

Lakota Zrelek led the Tigers with a 728 series, after starting the day with a 300 game, Dalton Page added 633 and Brady Staubs had 630.

Highland”s Dylan Esterle was the top individual with a 759 series, and Kent Roosevelt’s Matt Richards finished second with 736.

In the girls division, Nordonia finished with 3,390 total pinfall to claim the title. Tallmadge was second with 3,305, followed by Cuyahoga Falls (2,873).

Wadsworth’s Casey Hagenbaugh was the top individual with 646, the only girl to break the 600 barrier. Nordonia’s Kaitlyn McNutt was second with 584, folllowed by her teammate Grace Bzdafka with 570.

Entry fee is $100 per team, with one-in-four cashing. Teams bowl four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top four for the stepladder finals.
