Youth bowling report: Perry team tops JTBA Baker event

The Perry Panthers topped the field during the JTBA Baker Team Challenge at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes.

PERRY TWP. — The Perry Panthers team, seeded eighth going into the championship round, captured the title during the Junior Tournament Bowlers Association Baker Team Challenge on Sunday at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes.

The Panthers (213-187-209), who completed the 12-game qualifying round with 2,417 total pinfall, defeated sixth-seeded The Leftovers (217-148-163) 2-1 in the title match.

Perry opened the bracket round by stopping top-seeded Ball of Duty 181-213, 206-159, 213-163. It then defeated fourth-seeded Gutter Gang 179-176, 195-161 to reach the title match.

Ball of Duty topped the 16-team field with 2,559 during qualifying, 10-pins ahed of Lean Consumers.

The top four teams earned scholarship money, with the Panthers’ five-person team splitting $1,250. The Leftovers received $500 for their second-place finish.

JTBA: Yoder tops Welcome Back division

COLUMBUS — Division II individual girls state champion and Triway High School sophomore Emma Yoder of Triway defeated top-seeded Bethany Strong 326-317 to win the 15U girls division during the JTBA Welcome Back event at HP Lanes in March.

Yoder, third-seeded entering the championship bracket, topped No. 2 seed Allison Taylor 306-292 to advance to the title match.

Yoder finished the five-game qualifying round with 854, 200 pins behind Strong, in the 15-player field.

In the girls 18U division, Jackson’s Avery Hawkins was the No. 1 seed with 1,012 total pinfall, 90 pins ahead of second-place Payton Hartgrove.

But Hawkins fell in her opening bracket match 330-282 to No. 4 seed Madison Strouse. Jonathan Alder’s Danielle Phipps topped the division by stopping Strouse 394-295 in the title match.

In the boys division, Old Fort’s Hayden Tarris, the No. 1 seed, captured the 18U title with a 557-397 win over Bryce Lewin in the title match. Tarris shot 299 in Game 1 of the two-game final for the 59-player field.

Tarris led the field with 1,136, 42 pins ahead of Lewin.

In the boys 15U division, Quinn Dean defeated Tuslaw sophomore Cameron Kilgore 440-433 to take the title. Kilgore, the No. 9 seed in the 16-player bracket, topped No. 8 seed Nicholas Wehreman (449-313), No. 1 seed Landon Drebelbis (436-407) and No. 5 seed Luke Rhine (437-353) en route to the title match.

The 15-U division included 43 players.

OHSB: Abbott takes freshman title

COLUMBUS — Lake High School freshman Zachary Abbott captured the ninth-grade title during the Ohio High School Bowling State Individual Championships at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

Abbott, the No. 2 seed entering the eight-player bracket finals, topped No. 1 seed Nicholas Maliwesky 205-196 to capture the title.

In the boys 10th-grade division, Noah Riley edged Kyle Bollman 179-178 to claim the title in the 33-player field. Riley was the No. 1 seed with 1,000 total pinfall following the five-game qualifying round.

In the girls 10-grade division, top-seeded Triway sophomore Emma Yoder fell to No. 2 seeds Jade Gabor 225-192 in the title match. Yoder topped that field with 1,000.

The ninth-grade title went to No 4 seed Kailey Dowty, who defeated No. 6 seed Lady Voegle 156-148.

Other winners included Elliott Gordon in the seventh-eighth grade boys division and Arianna Kiessling in the seventh-eighth grade girls division.

Stark USBC sets tournaments

CANTON — The Stark County USBC will be holding a pair of youth events during the coming weeks.

A junior-adult spring scholarship event is set for noon April 9 at Park Centre Lanes with a $50 per team entry fee.

Teams must include one adult age 18 and older and one youth bowler, with teams each bowling a three-game series. Teams will be placed in one of four divisions based on the age of the youth bowler in the handicap event.

Brackets will be available with scholarships being awarded.

Also, a south singles challenge shot event is set for 10 a.m. on May14 at Eastbury Bowling Center. Entry fee is $50 with bowlers rolling four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top eight for single-elimination two-game matches. This is a scratch event.
