High school: OHSB crowns 11th, 12th grade champs

COLUMBUS — Ryan Abeling, Madison Tomko, Andrew Allen and Payton Hartgrove captured titles during the Ohio High School Bowling 11th and 12th Grade Singles Championships at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl recently.

Abeling, a Goshen High School senior, stopped Cincinnati Christian’s Zachary Beltz 188-172 in the 12th-grade boys title match. Abeling was the No. 2 seed following the five-game qualifying round of 48 players, with the top 16 advancing to single-game match play elimination rounds.

McKinley senior Alex Coffelt, eighth-seeded following qualifying with a 200 average, finished third overall, losing to Beltz 242-215 in the semifinal round.

Coffelt eliminated top-seeded Elijah Mayberry 219-182 in his opening match. Mayberry finished  with 1,100 total pinfall to lead the field.,

In the 12th-grade girls division, Hillsboro’s Madison Tomko, third-seeded following qualifying, defeated Makayla Velasquez 192-189 to claim the title. Both were first-team All-Ohio selections, with Velasquez taking the state individual title during the OHSAA Division I State Championships.

No. 1 qualifier Hannah Tahsler, who finished with 1,030 total pinfall, fell to No. 8 seed Kayleigh McMullen 214-162 in her opening match.

Central Catholic’s Alina Stebbins finished seventh overall, falling to Velasquez 181-178 in her opening match as the No 5 seed. Carrollton’s Tara Oberlin was eighth, losing to Tomko 187-150 in her first match as the No 6 seed.

JUNIOR RESULTS

In the 11th-grade boys division, Ironton’s Andrew Allen, the No 14 seed in the 55-player field, stopped Old Fort’s Hayden Tarris, the No. 1 seed, 248-206 in the title match. Tarris led the field with 1,072 total pinfall.

Payton Hartgrove of Westerville South, the state individual OHSAA State Championships runner-up to Velasquez by just one pin, took the 11th-grade girls title with a 178-141 win over Akron Hoban’s Carly Jones. Hartgrove was the No. 1 seed in the 26-player field with 1,070, while Jones was No 2 at 946.

JTBA: Area players top doubles event

PERRY TWP. — Tulsa High School’s Cameron Kilgore and the Triway duo of Emma Yoder and Addy Meshew captured titles during the JTBA-Lourdes University Junior Doubles Tournament recently at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes.

Kilgore teamed with Sunbury Big Walnut’s Aidan Furukawa (267-178) to defeat Elliott Gordon and Roman Caporale (177-227) for the 15U boys title. Kilgore and Furukawa were the No. 2 seed entering the semifinal round with 18 teams in the field.

Triway sophomores Yoder and Meshew were the No, 1 seed entering the semifinal round of the eight-team field with 1,959 total pinfall. They stopped No. 2-seeded Bethany Strong and Allison Taylor 433-333.

Wooster’s Abbie Leiendecker and partner Madison Strouse fell in the semifinals of the U18 division to eventual champions Brenna Hartzler and Karlie VanDuinen 400-345.

Ryan Hanzak and Nolan Blessing took the 18U boys title.
