Bowling report: Throckmorton tops PBA regional qualifier; DeVore, Allen earn state individual titles

PARMA HEIGHTS — Wickliffe 21-year-old two-handed left-hander Tony Throckmorton topped a field of 118 total bowlers during Sunday’s PBA-PBA50 Ohio Lottery Qualifier at Rebman Recreation.

A total of 19 spots for the the Ohio Lottery Baldo Campana-Dave D’Entlremont Memorial Central Open, set for April 26 at Rebman, were awarded along with five for the PBA50 regional, set for July 14-16. Entry fee was $80, with each entry into the regional worth $310.

Throckmorton, a 2023 Wickliffe High School graduate, started with 202, but finished his five-game qualifying block with 1,232 (a 246 average) to top the qualifier by 88 pins.

Finishing behind Throckmorton were Parma Padua High School sophomore Zachary Mayne, the 2025 Division I state individual champion, with 1,144, and Cleveland St. Ignatius junior Teague Green with 1,133.

The final cut spot was at 1,035, with Copley coach Caleb Shovestull and Brooklyn senior Adam Cowper, the 2026 OHSAA Division II state individual champion, tying for the spot. Shovestull was a rolloff to secure the berth.

The tournament was bowled on the 2026 Regional 40 oil pattern.

In the senior division, Bill Drsek took honors with 1,089 (217.8 average), finishing 25 pins ahead of Doug Moyer (1,064) with Jay Bandersky and James Traxler (1,036) tying for third. The final qualifying spot went to Danny Russell with 1,019.

Last year, over 45 bowlers emerged from two five-game qualifiers to bowl in the regional events.

STATE JUNIOR SINGLES

COLUMBUS — Perry High School senior Alex DeVore and Coventry junior Wade Allen captured titles during Ohio 7th-12 Grade State Individual Championships on Sunday at HP Lanes in Columbus.

The 11th- and 12th- grade events were Sunday; grades 7 through 10 participated Saturday.

Bowlers rolled five-game qualifiers before fields were cut for rounds of single-game match play to determine the champions.

DeVore, the No. 6 seed entering match play, stopped No. 5 seed Mabel Adams 214-192 to claim the title. Devore had to get past Perry senior teammate Arielle Clapper 204-161 in the semifinals, with Clapper finishing fourth overall.

Allen, the No. 3 seed stopped Braeden McCorkle 218-216 to claim the title in the 11th grade boys division. Allen stopped Lake’s Andrew Venus 189-170 in his opening match.

Reynoldsburg’s Quinn Dean was the boys 12th-grade champion, while Celina’s Choloe Bruce won in the 11th grade girls. Wooster’s Mackenzie Jentes also made the cut among junior girls and finished seventh.

Willowick’s Mason Panhorst, the No. 1 seed, topped the 10th grade boys Saturday, with Jackson’s Caleb Russell finishing sixth. Hillsboro’s Rylie Ison, also a No. 1 seed, topped the sophomore girls, with Louisville’s Paige Beard finishing third.
