MASSILLON — The Stark County High School Bowling Conference’s 20th season was highlighted by its second individual state champion, its first state championship team and several changes as it honored its top players and teams Sunday at Santangelo’s Party Center.

“It’s hard to believe that what started as a wish list for two women (Park Centre general manager Annie Case and first league commissioner Marie Schwab) and one key athletic director (Hoover’s Joe Eaton) has gotten us to this point,” SCHSBC president Bill Snier told a crowd of over 200 athletes and parents.

For the first time, the conference reached 26 teams this season and was adjusted to include four divisions, stretching over six Northeast Ohio counties, making it the state’s largest high school bowling conference.

After recording its first individual state champion a year ago since its inaugural season (Carrollton’s Cailyn Bright in Division II), the conference had its third individual champion in Triway sophomore Emma Yoder, who set a state Division II record with a 718 series.

Yoder helped lead Triway to the Division II state championship, recording a 3-0 victory over top-seeded Napoleon in the title match. It was the first state team championship in conference history.

TOP BOWLERS HONORED

The conference  honored its division champions, all-division teams and bowlers and coaches of the year during the event.

McKinley senior Brooke Tucker, who repeated as Federal Division girls player of the year and is a three-time state qualifier, received a special award as the lone four-year division first-team member.

Hoover senior Connor Sabella and Conotton Valley sophomore Bobby Brennan also received special awards for rolling the conference’s lone 300 games this season.

Yoder and Tucker were joined by Carrollton senior Tara Oberlin and Dover junior Kaylie Gibson as division girls players of the year.

Boys division players of the year included Brennan, Minerva senior Ahdyn Lautzenheiser, Jackson senior Andrew Austin and Triway sophomore Aaron Meshew.

Coaches of the year in the boys division included Carrollton’s Dave Davis, Perry’s Alex Lincoln, Triway’s Vince Yoder and New Philadelphia’s Jeff Locker. Top girls coaches included Carrollton’s Wendy Russell, Green’s Dustin Hughes, Triway’s Corby Anderson and Conotton Valley’s Brian Baxter.

Players and coaches of the year were selected in a vote among each division’s coaches. All conference teams were based on averages, with all players having to participate in at least two-thirds of their teams’ games this season.

Also honored were individuals and teams that advanced to the state tournaments this season.

MORE CHANGES COMING

After having lone commissioners during its first 19 seasons, the conference had three coaches serve as tri-commissioners this season. But that alignment may be changing.

Lake’s Pat King is resigning as conference vice president, but is willing to maintain his role as conference statistician.

“I learned this season that entering the conference stats is a time consuming job, along with coaching and my day job,” King wrote in a letter to the conference. “I will not, nor do I have time to, take on additional responsibilities.”

In addition, tri-commissioner Kim Heaton of McKinley said she also would be stepping down as soon as scheduling is complete for the season.

“It’s obviously a lot of time and hard work that I just don’t have time for between coaching and my regular job,” Heaton acknowledged to coaches.

The third tri-commissioner, Hoover’s Jeff Sabella, also said he would remain only to handle web site responsibilities and would like to forego other duties.

With these developments, the conference again will be looking for a commissioner for next season to handle administrative duties along with other tasks deemed necessary. Interested individuals should contact the current commissioners, Snier or awards, affairs and functions chairman Jim Heighway.

However, coaches also have discussed the formations of more league committees to assist in day-to-day conference operations, including the preseason tournament, banquet, fund-raising, etc. to relieve the commissioners of some of these tasks.

“We want to get the parents and coaches more involved and, at the same time, reduce some of the commissioner’s duties,” Heaton said. There will be future discussions among the executive board and coaches prior to decisions being made.

It also was announced that New Philadelphia will be leaving the conference to join the Ohio Cardinal Conference beginning next season, taking the total teams to 25 in both the boys and girls divisions. Divisions will remain the same for next season, with the Southeastern being reduced from seven to six teams.
