PBA60: Adcock takes lead at Super Senior Classic

LAS VEGAS — Tom Adcock averaged 237.17 over the opening six qualifying games to take a 15-pin lead during the USBC Super Senior Classic on Thursday.

Adcock, a 60-year-old Decatur, Ill., right-hander, finished the opening round with 1,423 total pinfall at Sam’s Town Hotel & Bowling in the tournament open to USBC members age 60 and older.

Mitch Vernon, of Olympia, Wash., stands second with 1,408, followed by Christopher Keane of Cape Coral, Fla., with 1,406.

The tournament drew a field of 173 players, with Noel Vazquez, Timothy Banks and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Tom Baker rolling 300 games during the opening round.

The full field returns for six more qualifying games at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday before the field is cut to the top 44 for Saturday’s six-game cashers’ round, beginning at 9 a.m. Total pinfall for 18 games will determine the 12 players advancing to the match-play portion of the Super Senior Classic.

The match-play finalists will be split into two groups for six games of round-robin competition, with the top finisher in each group earning an automatic spot in Sunday’s stepladder based on 24-game pinfall totals, including 30 bonus pins for each win.

The second, third and fourth seeds from each group will face off in simultaneous group stepladders starting Sunday at noon Eastern, before the main four-player stepladder for the title and $7,500 top prize begins at 2 p.m. Eastern.

The winners of each group stepladder will claim the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the finals, with seeding being determined based on their average for the event.

Don Moser stands 44th after Thursday’s action with 1,266, an average of 211.
