H.S. BOWLING: Triway girls finish seventh at nationals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Triway High School’s girls bowling team, which captured the OHSAA Division II state title this season, finished seventh overall during the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship on Saturday at Executive Strike and Spare Lanes.

The Titans finished eighth during the qualifying round in a field of 33 teams to earn a spot into the 20-team survivor round. Qualifying included three regular games and three Baker System games.

Addy Meshew led the Titans with a 593 series during qualifying, with Emma Yoder adding 575. Other Triway scores included Kennedy Finley 560, Danielle Densmore 530 and Lindsay Miller 502. The Titans finished with 500 during the Baker games.

The Titans shot 576 during their three Baker games in the opening survivor round of 12 teams to move up one spot to seventh, but they were unable to advance any further during subsequent rounds.

Triway shot 518 in the Round of 12, struggling with a 133 in Game 2, and 531 in the Round of 8, including their high Baker of 213 in Game 3.

The tournament continued Sunday with singles competition.

The event featured more than 600 bowlers representing 20 states.

In the boys division, Ashland finished 32nd among 51 boys teams with 3,255 and failed to advance. The cut was at 3,481.

PBA REGIONAL: Acosta claims first pro title

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — St. Xavier University (Ill.) graduate Alex Acosta claimed his first professional title by topping the field during the PBA Pro Bowl West Central/Midwest Challenge on Saturday.

The one-day event, open to non-champions only, featured a seven-game qualifier, with the top 16 advancing to bracket match play at Pro Bowl West.

Acosta, a non-member from Bolingbrook, Ill., compiled a 6-2 match-play record and finished with 5,755 total pinfall to take the title and the $1,500 first-place check.

Brent Boho of Colgate, Wis., was second with 3,845, and Mt. Zion, Ill., resident Corey Cistern was third with 3,310.

Phillips Watson of Cahokia, Ill., was the qualifying leader with 1,592, with Acosta sitting sixth at 1,548. Watson finished ninth overall (3,434). Acosta averaged 214.60 over 15 games, while Boho averaged 225.69 over 13 games.

The cut was at 1,483, with Cory Hersha gaining the final spot. Non-member Dakoka Donham gained the final cash spot in 26th place with 1,446.

The PBA Central Region returns to action June 24 through 26 with the Park Lanes Central Open at Park Lanes Bowling Center in Heath.
