PBA50: Angelo claims regional title in Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN — Brad Angelo captured his ninth regional title, stopping Dino Castillo 257-210 in the title match of the 25th annual Progressive-Gardeman Insurance Agency Central-Midwest Open on Sunday.

Angelo, a Lockport, N.Y., right-hander, completed the third advancer round with 3,873 total pinfall, an average of 227.82 through 17 games, to earn the No. 1 seed for the stepladder finals at Al-Mar Lanes.

Castillo, a Highland Village, Texas, right-hander, was the No. 4 seed for the stepladder finals. he stopped Fort Worth, Texas, right-hander and former Major League Baseball pitcher John Burkett in his opening match 178-172 before stopping 55-year-old Maineville right-hander Bill Watson 191-159 in the semifinal match.

Angelo, who stood third following the eight-game qualifying round, took the top spot after the first four-game advancer round by 64 pins over Burkett. He earned $6,000 for the win.

Castillo earned the four spot for the stepladder finals by just 21 pins over PBA Hall of Famer Chris Barnes.

Wadsworth’s Dale Csuhta earned a spot in the first two advancer rounds by placing ninth following qualifying with 1,714. He finished 16th overall with 3,036 (202.40 average) and earned $1,000.

Among other area players, Akron’s Don Hogue finished 44th with 1,548; Austintown’s Ed Carter was 66th with 1,462; North Canton’s Mike Parker was 74th with 1,446; and Canton’s Tony Johnson was 84th with 1,385 in the 95-player field.

Most of the field will be in Hammond, Ind., on Monday for the start of the PBA50 South Shore Open at Olympia Lanes. Qualifying begins Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. with the first of two seven-game shifts.
