Bowling briefs: Yoder leads at Teen Masters

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Triway High School junior Emma Yoder had the lead following the opening six games of the 25th annual Teen Masters Championships at Thunderbowl Arena.

Yoder finished her opening six games with 1,252 total pinfall, an average of 208.67, to hold a 16-pin lead on defending champion Brooklyn Buchanon.

“My third game was a 169, but my dad had a talk with me to just relax and let everything go,” Yoder told The 11th Frame.com. “I then got comfortable when we moved and I finished with 227, 235 and 222. Those last three games really helped me.”

It was Yoder’s second time in this event after a six-year absence. But she did not expect to do this well after a disappointing performance in Junior Gold.

“I surprised myself,” she said. “But this year I really got into bowling, especially with high school. That really made my love for the sport grow.”

Bowlers will roll six more qualifying games on Tuesday and six on Wednesday before the field is cut to the top 25 percent of the participants for five more games Thursday.

Among other area players, Wooster’s Abbie Leiendecker sits 17th with 1,082; Triway’s Addy Meshew was 20th with 1,071; and Carrollton’s Tara Oberlin is 66th with 875 in the 74-player girls division.

In the boys division, Connor Rogus of Macomb, Mich., leads the field with 1,356 (226.0 average).

Among area players, Tulsa’s Cameron Kilgore is 49th with 1,112; Triway’s Aaron Meshew is 51st with 1,111; and Triway’s Chad Harper is 97th with 1,015 in the 131-player field.
