CANTON — The Stark County USBC announced several national awards earned by its members from the United States Bowling Congress during the 2021-22 winter season.
The one-man, two-women team of Rich Stoffer Jr., Taylor Devaul and Kara Kutz claimed first nationally with their scratch series. The trio, bowling for sponsor KP Machinery, finished with 2,250 total pinfall.
In addition, the four-man McCourry Property team of Brian Ball, Marcus Marcelli, Alex McCourry and Brett McCourry finished third nationally in the four-man team category with 3,113.
There also were national awards announced as the USBC announced awards provided through information from average and award forms from league secretaries. Those included the following:
- In the men’s division in high averages, Brett McCourry (239 average), Joe Hostetler (237), Brian Ball (234), Jason Corrin (233), Jim Fellows (233), J.D. Jones (233), Allan McQuaid (233), Dan Block (232), Wayne Lovelace (230), Justin McIlvain (230), Jeff Mowls (230) and Don Sprout (230) ranked in the top 100.
- In the women’s division, Jossett Patrick (225), Devaul (223), Renae Burns 220), Breanna Mowls 215), Tiffany Schmitt 214), Bonny Reed-Bell (212), Mandi Testa (212), Kutz (211), Allison Maurer (210) and Kim Zerbey (211, 209) ranked in the top 100.
- Men’s high series awards also went to J.D. Jones (875), Dustin Dingler (845), Hostetler (832), Dennis Welty (830), Brandon Arnold (829), Josh Mellott (829), Jason Bogavich (827), Brian Reichard (827), Dan Simmons (827), Corrin (826) and Jason North (826).
- Women’s high series went to Zerbey (823)(, Patrick (793), Kutz (792), Devaul (779), Schmitt (761), Breanna Mowls (743), Jackie Shahan (743), Kari Snyder (722), Sarah Edwards (721) and Burns (708).
JONES, MORRISON TOP DOUBLE SWEEPER
AKRON — Tim Jones Jr. and Ian Morrison, top seeded following qualifying, captured the initial Spins Bowl Akron Doubles Sweeper on Sunday at Spins Bowl Akron.
Jones an Morrison, who finished with 1,925 total pinfall during the four-game qualifier, defeated No. 2 seeded Howard Moore and Ben Hawkins in the title match. Final scores were unavailable for stepladder matches.
Morrison shot 950 during qualifying and Jones added 975 as they led the 20-team field by 80 pins.
The team of Ray Cook and Jason Waters finished third, followed by Ty McKinney and Tyler Meredith in fourth.
The cut number for the stepladder teams was 1,835. McKinney had the top individual series with 997.
First place paid $640, with $400 for second.
Hawkins shot 300 in Game 1 of qualifying.
JTBA: TAHSLER, STRONG AMONG AKRON WINNERS
AKRON — Brenden Tahsler and Bethany Strong were among winners during Sunday’s JTBA Spins Bowl Akron Youth Open at Spins Bowl Akron.
Tahsler, the No. 15 seed following qualifying, stopped ninth-seeded Ian Carpenter 453-405 in the 18U boys finale to earn the top spot. Strong, the No. 8 seed, defeated third-seeded Madison Strouse to claim the girls 18U title.
Other winners included Aiden Furukawa in boys 15U; Olivia Lizzi in girls 15U; and Miles Gordon in boys 12U.
Among area players, Wooster’s Abbie Leiendecker and Triway’s Emma Yoder made the cut in the girls 18U division, with the former finishing eighth after winning her opening match and the latter finishing ninth after an opening-round loss. Also reaching match play were Green’s Veda Hughes and Triway’s Addy Meshew, who also dropped opening matches. Ashland’s Max Oaken and Landon Dreibelbis finished second and sixth, respectively.

USBC: AREA LEAGUES HOLD MEETINGS, SEEK BOWLERS
CANTON — Several leagues in the Stark County USBC have held meetings in the past week and are seeking bowlers to fill rosters or to add teams for the 2022-23 season.
Some that have been brought to SOB’s attention include:
- Monday night open league at Eastbury Bowling Center seeks individuals and teams, with the meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 28;
- The two Summit County Senior Traveling leagues, with Jim Mitchell as secretary, that bowl at noon on Monday (Tri-County) and Wednesday (Senior All-Star) for ages 55 and older. Contact Jim Mitchell through Face book or email jimmitchell324@gmail.com;
