PBA briefs: Wooster girl tops PBA Junior; Rettig wins at RPI

PBA JUNIOR: Leiendecker takes title

COLUMBUS — Wooster’s Abbie Leiendecker was the top qualifier in the Girls U18 division and went on to capture the title in the PBA Junior HP Lanes Central Regional on Sunday at HP Lanes.

Leiendecker, who averaged 212.67 during the six-game qualifying round, was standing second after the advancer round with 2,765 total pinfall after 14 games, 27 pins behind Smithville’s Breanna Hartzler.

After topping Prospect’s Bethany Strong 208-170 during the stepladder semifinal. Leiendecker captured the title with a 212-210 win over Hartzler to earn a $1,000 scholarship. Hartzler received $150. Wooster’s Emma Yoder missed the cut to the stepladder finals after averaging 174.14 for 14 games.

In the boys 18U division, Marion’s Jayden Combs earned the $1,000 scholarship with a 202-196 win over Ironton’s Andrew Allen in the title match. The division drew 31 bowlers.

Massillon’s Cameron Kilgore, the No, 4 seed following the six-game qualifier after averaging 196.50, went 2-5 in match play to finish eighth overall with 2,457. Combs was the No. 1 seed heading into the stepladder finals. Kilgore earned a $175 scholarship.

Uniontown’s Zachary Abbott missed the cut to the advancer’s round, averaging 184.33 during qualifying and finishing 14th.

In the U15 mixed division, Mike Habegger of Bluffton, Ind., topped Ashland’s Max Oeken 220-208 to claim the title. Oeken was the qualifying leader, averaging 209.17 for six games, and was the top seed heading into the stepladder finals after going 4-3-0 in match play.

PBA50 CENTRAL REGION: Retting claims RPI title

DELPHOS — Andrew Rettig claimed his second career title, and first in the Central Region, by topping No. 1 seed Brian Kretzer in the title match of the PBA50 Mel Westrich Memorial-Brunswick Central Open on Sunday.

Rettig, a 51-year-old Hamburg, N.Y., left-hander, topped 57-year-old Mason, Mich., right-hander Larry Verble in his opening match before facing Kretzer, a 56-year-old Dayton right-hander.

Kretzer was the No. 1 seed after averaging 230.06 through 16 games. Rettig was third after average 224.19, finishing 94 pins behind Kretzer. Rettig won $1,500, and joins Kretzer and Verble in earning Regional Players Invitational berths in January in Las Vegas.

Wadsworth right-hander Dad Cshuta finished fifth overall, missing the cut to the stepladder finals by 53 pins after averaging 220.88 over 16 games. Canton’s Tony Johnson finished 31st overall with 1,518 through eight games; Austintown’s Ed Carter was 39th with 1,472; Strasburg’s Steve Easterday was 44th with 1,429; and Burbank’s Jin Dilyard was 50th with 1,349 in the 54-player field.
