SOB BOWLING BRIEFS: OBC holds second event, JTBA winding down and H.S. postseason tourney dates are set for the Northeast District

COLLEGE BOWLING: NORTHWESTERN OHIO. OHIO STATE CAPTURE OBC TITLES

COLUMBUS — The Northwestern Ohio men and Ohio State women topped their respective divisions during the Ohio Bowling Conference’s second event Saturday and Sunday at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace.

In the men’s division, Northwestern Ohio finished with 8,061 total pinfall to top the 17-team field, with Walsh University finishing second at 7,505, followed by St. Vincent College (7,369) and Muskingum (7,197).

Muskingum’s Evan Thro was the top individual with 1,021 for four games, including shooting 279 and 300 during his final two games. He was followed by Northwestern Ohio’s Devin Flowers (967) and Dominic Weicht (932).

Jordan Norris was Walsh’s top player, finishing 18th with 868, followed by Caden Mutchler with 865.

In the girls division, Ohio State topped the 12-team field with 7,006, with Northwestern Ohio taking second with 6,790, followed by Walsh with 6,739.

Mount Vernon Nazarene’s Hannah Vaughn was the top individual with 927, followed by Northern Kentucky’s Abby Bach with 900. Ohio State placed two players in the top 10.

Alicia Yacono was high for Walsh, finishing 10th with 784.

Walsh’s women’s and men’s junior varsity teams also captured titles, with the women finishing with 5,963, and Robert Morris taking second (5,810). In the men’s division, Walsh finished with 7,318, with NorthwesternOhio taking second with 7,109).

Maggie Lewis led the Walsh women’s junior varsity with a 779 series to finish 12th overall. The Cavaliers’ Robert Komlosi finished 12th overall with 883 to lead the Walsh men’s JVs.

JTBA: JUSTINGER, VARGO TOP ADULT-JUNIOR EVENT

OAKWOOD — Joe Justinger and Dean Vargo combined for 404 to top the team of Chris LeSueur and Dylan Mishak and lead the boys 18U division during the Junior Tournament Bowlers Association’s UPike Adult-Junior doubles event at Roseland Lanes.

Vargo and Justinger, fifth seeded following the five-game qualifying round, survived four single-game rounds to earn the title and a $750 scholarship for Justinger in the 35-team field. LeSueur and Mishak, the No. 4 seed, shot 369 during the finale to take second. 

In the girls 18U division, the team of Brenna Hartzler and Melissa Voytko topped a 15-team field, defeating Emma Yoder and Jodi Woessner 408-355 in the finale to earn Hartzler a $480 scholarship.

The final JTBA tournament of the first half of the season will be the Muskingum University Youth Open singles event at 9 a.m. Oct. 30 at Poelking Lanes South in Dayton.

DATES SET FOR NE DISTRICT BOWLING TOURNEYS

AKRON — High school bowling sectional and district dates and sites for the Northeast District have been set for the 2022-23 season, according to tournament manager Ray Stalnaker.

Tournament dates for the Eastern District have not been formally announced.

The Division II state tournament is set for March 3 and 4, 2023, and the Division I event is March 10 and 11, both at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus.
