
TESTA TOPS FIELD IN WEST VIRGINIA
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — After qualifying second in the 119-player field at Emerson Lanes, Massillon’s Frank Testa navigated through match play to claim first place in the Top of the ‘Burg Scratch Singles Tournament on Sunday.
Testa, top-seeded for the stepladder finals after shooting 434 for two games during the Round of Eight match play, stopped Dan Higgins in the title match. Higgins,, the No. 4 seed following qualifying, advanced to the title match with a win over eighth-seeded Brian Watson in the semifinals.
Watson had stopped Shandon Kidder in the quarterfinals.
To advance to the stepladder finals, Testa stopped Canton’s Justin McIlvain in the Round of Eight. Watson advanced with a win over Perry Township’s Don Sprout in the Round of Eight. Sprout was the No. 17 seed; McIlvain was No. 7.
Austin Hendricks was the top qualifier with 1,003 for four games, 29 pins ahead of Testa.
The field was cut to the top 24 for match play following the qualifying round.

HOGUE EARNS TEAM CANADA SPOTS
MONTREAL — Akron’s Don Hogue earned spots on the Canadian National Team and Masters team with his performance during the 2023 Canadian Team Trials at Laurentian Lanes.
Hogue, who qualified for the Masters team a year ago en route to earning medals in the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic, finished sixth overall in the Team Canada trials with 6,467 total pinfall through 30 games. Mitch Hupe, the No. 1 seed, earned the overall title with a 289-201 victory over Francois Lavoie in the title match.
Other team members with Hupe, Lavoie and Hogue are Jordan Jung, Austyn Ducharme and Jean-Francois Brassard. Hogue earned the sixth spot by 46 pins over Darren Alexander.
Hogue’s big move came in Shift 4 when he led the shift with 1,499 total pinfall over six games, including a 300 and a 278, to jump into the top six. This came after sitting 23rd after the third shift.
Hogue then completed play by finishing 10th during Shift Five with 1,160 to secure his placement.
All shifts were bowled on different oil patterns as determined by the Canadian Tenpin Federation.
Hogue’s total also topped the senior (Master) standings, and he was the lone senior to reach the 30-game level.
The Pan Am Games are set for Oct. 20 to Nov. 5 in Santiago, Chile.

COLLEGE BOWLING: WALSH TAKES SECOND AT OWN EVENT
PERRY TWP. — Walsh University’s women finished second in the four-team field during the first Cavalier Classic bowling tournament Saturday and Sunday at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes.
The Cavaliers fell in the best-of-seven Baker System title match to Emmanuel (Ga.) 4-0. Penn State Behrend took third after stopping Wright State 4-3 in the consolation match.
Walsh compiled a 7-3 record during the overall tournament, which included five regular team games and four Baker System games before moving on to match play.
Walsh’s Alicia Yacono turned in the top individual performance of the event with a 927 series, followed by Makenzie Gossett of Wright State (922) and Emmanuel’s Gillian Moore (889). Other top finishers or the Cavaliers were Rachel Young (855) and Addison Starr (847).
