BOWLING BRIEFS: HDP updates, Portage County Masters and upcoming events

COHAGAN TOPS MLK SINGLES

FAIRLAWN — Casey Cohagan shot a scratch 813 series, including a 300 in Game 2, to claim the $1,000 top prize in the Hit Dem Pockets MLK Classic recently at AMF Riviera Lanes.

The handicap event drew featured both singles and doubles competition over three days.

Cohagan finished 12 pins ahead of Kurt Meier (801) and 20 ahead of Keith Schooler (792).

In doubles, the team of Ashley Bryant and Tim Lynch finished with 1,466 to claim the win and a $2,000 top prize. Lynch also teamed with Kendra Mathis to finish second with 1,464.

Lynch shot 791 for the win and 731 to take second. Bryant had 675 (42 handicap) and Mathis shot 733 (84 handicap). The team of Mandi Testa and Cooper Smith finished third with 1,446.

In addition, the team of Tim Voytko and DJ Assaff took first place in the HDP Doubles Sweeper on Sunday at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia.

The pair topped Vinny Bellar and Eric Bator and Reggie Hawthorne and Corey Scherzo to earn the win

LIEDERBACH TOPS PORTAGE MASTERS

KENT — No. 2 seed Ryan Liederbach stopped Sam Dewitt to capture the Portage County Masters title Sunday at Spins Bowl Kent.

Qualifiers bowled eight games Saturday at two centers (Sky Lanes and Kent Lanes) and four more Sunday at Spins Bowl Kent before the field was cut to the top 12 for four semifinal games. The field was then cut to the top four for the stepladder finals. 

During the stepladder finals, No. 4 seed Kevin Oravecz topped No. 3 Ryan Throwbridge in the opening match before Liederbach topped Oravecz to reach the finale. No stepladder scores were available.

Dewitt led the field with 3,730 total pinfall for 16 games (233.1 average), followed by Liederbach (3,699).

Oravecz gained the final stepladder spot by just one pin (3,579-3,578) over Joe Bailey. The event drew 49 players.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS: Klonowski Memoriał, Clutch doubles coming up

The 31st annual John Klonowski Memorial Scratch Singles, Stark County’s longest running scratch event, is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 5 at Eastbury Bowling Center.

Entry fee is $110, with bowlers rolling five qualifying games on a house oil pattern before the field is cut to the top 20 for rounds of three-game match play by seed. Winners advance to a second three-game match play round before the five finalists bowl in a single-game stepladder finals.

First place is worth $1,600 and a free entry to next year’s event based on a field of 106 players.

* The Ohio Blasting Under 50-Over 50 Scratch Doubles is set for 9 a.m. March 19 at Clutch Lanes and Recreation Center in Cuyahoga Falls. Entry fee is $250 per team, with first place worth $4,000 based on 48 entries. Teams must have one player under age 50 and one player age 50 or older. Bowlers will bowl five qualifying games before the field is cut to the top eight for the semifinal round. The tournament will be contested on a PBA50 Tour pattern.
