College bowling: Northwestern Ohio, Muskingum take OBC titles

COLUMBUS — The Northwestern Ohio men and Muskingum women captured titles during the Ohio Bowling Conference’s No. 4 tournament recently at Columbus Square Bowling Palace.

In the men’s division, Northwestern finished with 7,990 total pinfall, with Muskingum taking second (7,852) and Robert Morris third (7,461) in the 14-team field.

Walsh University, which used a split squad with its other varsity team participating in the American Heartland Bowling Association Tournament V at Miracle Lanes in Toledo, was ninth with 6,769.

Northwestern Ohio’s Devin Flowers was the top individual with 1,306 for five games, an average of 261, and finishing 158 pins ahead of runner-up James Meyer of Robert Morris (1,148). The next two were from Muskingum — Brody Wildenmann (1,129) and Ethan McDonald (1,125).

Bailey McGinnis was the top Walsh finisher (20th, 1,024), followed by Zachary Able (21st, 1,014).

In the girls varsity race, Muskingum finished with 6,675, followed by Ohio State (6,652) and Walsh (6,616) in the 14-team field.

Northern Kentucky’s Toni Allen was the high individual with 1,038, just 22 pins ahead of Ohio State’s Ashleigh Westervelt (1,016). Walsh was led by Addison Starr, who finished eighth at 932 and Jessica Lawrence, who was 11th with 928.

Muskingum’s women and Northwestern Ohio’s men also captured junior varsity titles, with Walsh’s women finishing fourth. Hannah DeFord was the top player for the Cavaliers, finishing fifth overall in the women’s division with 959.

WALSH LEADS AHBA IN POINTS

Walsh leads the American Heartland Bowling Association in the men’s points race, holding a one point lead over Wright State, heading into Saturday’s event in Sandusky.

At last week’s event, Wright State earned the men’s win with 7,613, followed by Adrian (Mich.) with 7,477 and Madonna (Mich.) with 7,460. Walsh finished fifth with 7,247).

Trine’s Corbin Garris was the top individual with 1,167 for five games, followed by Wright State’s Brent Shroyer (1,147) and Angelo Biondo (1,111). Jordan Norris was the top Walsh individual, finishing eighth with 1,074. Teammate Ryan Hank was 19th (1,021) and James Jackson was 21st (1,018).

Madonna captured the women’s division with 7,350, followed by Alma (7,339) and Trine (7,110). Walsh did not participate.

Trine’s Jenna Beatty was the top women’s individual with 1,102, followed by Alma’s Morgan Smith (1,058).

OTHER COLLEGE ACTION

In other recent collegiate action, the Pikeville women and men wrapped their weekend with wins at the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Thomas N. Burris Memorial in Louisville, Ken.

The single-day event featured 21 women’s varsity teams and 25 varsity programs in the men’s division. The format included five traditional games and 12 Baker games. Total pinfall determined the winner in each division.

In the women’s division, Pikeville powered its way to the lead in the traditional block, averaging more than 207 as a team to build a 174-pin lead over Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah.

SCAD-Savannah was able to make up the difference after eight Baker games to take the lead, but the Bears rallied in Games 9, 10 and 11 with 236, 236 and 227 to reclaim the top spot and hold on for victory with a 7,552 total.

Pikeville was coming off its second Tier I win of the season the previous weekend after earning the top spot at the Kegel/ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic in Addison, Illinois.

SCAD-Savannah finished second with 7,489, and Webber International moved from fifth to third during Baker competition, finishing with 7,398.

In the women’s individual standings, Pikeville’s Kristina Catoe recorded her sixth top-five finish of the season and first win by averaging more than 227 with a five-game score of 1,136. Catoe rolled games of 180, 237, 259, 237 and 223 to finish at the top of the leaderboard.

Pamela Perez of SCAD-Savannah was the runner-up with 1,119. Webber’s Jaqueline Witura was third with 1,098, and Pikeville’s Brianna Rogers was fourth with 1,095. Bailey Delrose of St. Francis-Illinois followed her win Saturday at the MSC Lynne Jordan Memorial with a fifth-place finish Sunday with 1,083.

Pikeville averaged more than 231 as a team to pace the men’s field during the traditional block, including a 1,213 performance in Game 2, to take a 135-pin advantage over Webber into the final 12 Baker games.

The Bears were able to maintain their spot at the top by averaging more than 228 during the Baker block to record their second win of the weekend (MSC Lynne Jordan Memorial on Saturday) with an 8,517 total.

Webber was the runner-up with 8,421, and Tennessee Southern made its way to third place after averaging more than 236 during Baker competition to get to 8,274.

Pikeville’s Eli Mayberry averaged more than 251 for his five games Sunday to claim his first win of the season at the Thomas N. Burris Memorial, posting 1,258. Mayberry tossed games of 237, 254, 255, 223 and 289 to secure the top spot.

Webber’s Nick Larsen finished second with 1,209 and was followed by Pikeville’s Ryan Taylor (1,200), Kentucky Wesleyan’s Seth Koloski (1,197) and Tennessee Wesleyan’s Jacob Watts (1,178).

SCAD-Savannah’s Tyrell Ingalls rolled a 300 in Game 3 of the traditional block on his way to a 13th-place finish with 1,154.

* At the MSC Lynne Jordan Memorial in Louisville, Kentucky, the Pikeville men kicked off the weekend with a 171-pin victory. The title in the women’s division was determined in the final frames as SCAD-Savannah recorded a two-pin victory over St. Francis-Illinois.

* At the Blue and Orange in Carmel, N.Y., the Suffolk-Grant men and Molloy women rolled to big wins.

* At the Northeast Classic in Deptford, N.J., the Nebraska women recorded a 4-2 victory in the title match against Vanderbilt.

* At the Storm Baker Challenge in Addison, Ill., the Judson women claimed the bracket win by defeating top seed Davenport in the championship match, 3-1. The Calumet men also recorded a 3-1 win to best St. Ambrose for the title in the all-Baker event.

* The Wichita State men and women swept the top spots at the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference (SWIBC) – Event 5 in Dallas and SWIBC – Event 6 in Plano, Texas. During SWIBC – Event 5, Wichita State’s Spencer Robarge delivered games of 300, 256, 300, 218 and 235 for a five-game block of 1,309 (261.8 average).

* At the Westchester Invitational in West Babylon, N.Y., the Nassau CC women cruised to the top of the standings. The Suffolk-Grant men put together another big effort to collect their second win of the weekend.

* At the Clarke Invite in Dubuque, Iowa, the Iowa Western CC men fired 221 in the final Baker game to overtake Iowa Central CC for a 12-pin win. On the women’s side, William Penn posted a wire-to-wire victory.

* At the Brunswick Peacock Classic in Waterloo, Iowa, the Newman women collected the win as the top seed in the bracket, besting Lewis in the finals, 4-1.

* At the Sonic Boom Invitational in Fannin, Mississippi, the Louisiana Tech women defeated Alabama-Birmingham in the title match, 4.5-1.5.
