Bowling briefs: Stark USBC events, JTBA results, Hall of Fame returns

STARK USBC SETS TOURNEYS

CANTON — The Stark County USBC has entry forms available for its Open, Women’s and Youth Challenge Singles tournaments.

The Youth Singles Challenge is set for 10 a.m. April 8 at Eastbury Bowling Center. Entry fee is $50.

The event will be contested on the 45o-foot Kegel Route 66 Challenge oil pattern. There will be separate age divisions for 18U and 13U for boys and girls.

Players will bowl a four-game qualifier until the field is cut to the top eight for single-elimination match play with two-game pinfalls. This is a scratch event.

The women’s championships are set for April 14-15 (team) and April 21-22 (doubles and singles) at Strike Zone Lanes.

Entry fee is $75 per team and $60 per player for doubles and singles with a $2 all-events fee.

The men’s championship, also set for Strike Zone, is set for April 23 trough 28 (team) and April 30 through May 5 (doubles and singles).

Entry fees are the same as the women’s event: $75 for team and $60 per team for singles and doubles with a $2 all-events fee.

JTBA HOLDS WELCOME BACK EVENT IN COLUMBUS

COLUMBUS — Carter Street, Madison Strouse, Aiden Furukawa, Kendall Craig and Miles Gordon during Sunday’ls JTBA-RKH Coaching Welcome Back tournament at the Columbus Square Bowling Palace.

A field of 167 bowlers competed in the first JTBA event following the conclusion of the high school season.

In the 18U boys division, the 12th-seeded Street stoped North Canton’s Chase Wensel, a No. 15 seed, 470-452 in the two-game title match.

Bowlers bowled five qualifying games before the field was cut to the top 16 (based on entries) in each division for two-game match-play elimination rounds.

In 18U girls, No. 4 seed Strousse stopped No. 2 Brenna Hartzler 439-408.

In other divisions:

  • Furukawa, the No. 16 seed, topped No. 7 seed Landon Driebelbis 435-378 in boys U15.
  • Top-seeded Craig defeated No. 2 Lacy Holden 401-371.
  • Top-seeded Gordon defeated No. 2 Evan Johnson 459-374.

The JTBA takes a break until April 1 with the Ohio State seventh through 10th and 11 and 12th grade singles championships sent for March 25 and 26 at HP Lanes in Columbus.

CASHOF RESURRECTS BOWLING HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS

CANTON — The Greater Canton Amateur Sports Hall of Fame is resurrecting inductions into the Stark County Bowling Hall of Fame this year.

Nomination forms are available at area centers in three categories: men or women’s superior performance; meritorious service and recognition of contribution.

Qualifiers in the first two categories (A and B) must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be a 15-year member of the Stark County USBC and a participant in organized leagues for 15 years (that includes Greater Canton Bowling Association, Canton Women’s Bowling Association, Massillon and Alliance bowling association or women’s bowling associations);
  • Nominee must never have been suspended by the USBC;
  • Will be evaluated by a review committee to determine eligibility; and
  • Male nominees must be ages 50 or older and lady nominees 40 or older.

Other halls of fame that will be inducting new classes are fumbleball and disc golf.

SUMMIT USBC SETS SCHOLARSHIP TOURNAMENT

The Summit County USBC will be holding a junior-adult scholarship spring fundraiser event at 1 p.m. March 26 at AMF Riviera Lanes.

Entry fee is $40 per team, with three divisions: Division A will be scratch and Divisions B and C will have handicap.

Division A is youth bowlers with average 181 or higher; Division B is youth bowlers with averages of 141-180; and Division C is 140 and below. Adult average is based on the highest current average of 21 games or more.

Each division winner will receive a $250 scholarship for their SMART account.
