Bowling briefs: Sweeper and H.S. results; tourney announcements

AKRON SPINS SWEEPER RESULT

AKRON — No. 3 seeded Dean Billings and James Nolen topped a 23-team field in the recent Spins Bowl Akron Sunday Doubles Sweeper at Spins Bowl Akron.

Billings and Nolan defeated No. 1 seeded Ted Kays and Ty McKinney to earn the win.

The highlight came in the semifinals when Nolen shot 300 and Billings had 279 to defeat No. 2 seed Tyler Meredith and Frank Testa 579-508.

Also finishing fourth was T.J. Charles and Eric Randazzo, with the final cash spot going to Brian Walker and Vicktor Varner.

Kays and McKinney led qualifying with 1,949 total pinfall, just 13 pins ahead of Testa and Meredith.

Kays was the top individual during qualifying, finishing with 993 for four games. Nolan, Testa, Matt Latarski and Donnie Scheck shot 279 as the high games during the qualifying round.

First place paid $800, with the final cash spot earning $176.

The next scratch doubles sweeper will be at 6 p.m. April 16 at Spins Bowl Akron. Contact Frank Dallas for information.

H.S. BOWLING: Triway’s Yoder claims junior singles title

COLUMBUS — Triway High School junior Emma Yoder defeated Newark’s Olivia Strait 188-172 in the title match to claim the 11th grade title during the 11th-12th Grade State Singles Championships recently at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

Yoder, the No. 2 seed overall, finished with 990 total pinfall during the five-game qualifying round. Teammate Addy Meshew was the No. 1 seed with 993, but she was beaten in her quarterfinal match by Strait 208-165.

In the senior girls division, No. 5 seed Payton Hargrove of Columbus defeated No. 7 seed Marissa Jones of Brookpark 234-192 to claim the title.

Dover’s Kaylie Gibson was the No. 6 seed, but fell to No. 3 seed Madison Strouse 234-123 in her opening match.

In the boys division, North Royalton’s Dominic Catanese II and Hilliard’s Caelan Guthrie captured the senior and junior titles, respectively.

North Canton Hoover’s Chase Wensel made the cut as the No. 5 seed, but fell to Carson Shroyer 279-231 in his quarterfinal match in the 49-player field.

H.S. BOWLING: Lake’s Abbott claims sophomore title

COLUMBIUS — Lake High School sophomore Zachary Abbott stopped Steven Demchak 237-213 to claim a title during the Ohio 7th-10th Grade State Singles Championships recently at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

Abbott, who was the qualifying leader with 1,175 total pinfall in the 44-player field, also shot 299 in Game 5. He defeated Casey Lippencott (177-163) and Colton Long (233-199) in his earlier match-play matches. 

Top-seeded Kaitlyn Greenaway of Boardman won the girls sophomore title with a 182-158 win over Haley Goodman in the title match. Greenaway led qualifying with 1,009 total pinfall in the 20-player field.

Ashland’s Landon Drebelibis captured the boys freshman title with a 253-161 win over Luke Rhine in the title match. He defeated teammate Max Oaken 263-197 in the semifinals.

Drebelibis was the No. 3 seed.

Kimberlee Yocum took the girls freshman title with a 227-198 win over Lacey Holden. Yocum was the No. 4 seed. 

Jackson’s Rylee Dunn was the No. 7 seed in the 13-player field, but fell to Holden 222-194 in her quarterfinal match. 

In the seventh and eighth grade divisions, Elliot Gordon topped Cooper Crouch 194-151 to take the boys title, and Bailey Massingill topped Lily Strouse 182-159 to top the girls.

JUNIOR BOWLING: STARK TOURNEY SET

CANTON — The Stark County USBC will be holding a Youth Singles Challenge Shot Tournament at 9 a.m. April 8 at Eastbury Bowling Center.

Entry fee is $50, with the tourney being run on the 45-foot Kegel Route 66 Challenge oil pattern.

There will be competition in two age divisions for girls and boys with bowlers rolling four qualifying games before the divisions are cut to the top eight for single-elimination match play with winners determined by two-game pinfalls.

Bowlers must be USBC-certified to compete.

ADULT TOURNEY: FURBAY ELECTRIC OPEN SET

CANTON — The 21st annual Furbay Electric Open is set for 9 a.m. May 7 at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes.

Entry fee is $75, with first place being worth $1,000, based on 72 entries. Entries as of this week were at 110, with a capacity of 138.

Bowlers will roll five qualifying games before the field is cut to the top 16 with 72 in the field; 20 if field excedes 80. That will be followed by two-game match-play rounds with total pinfall determining winners, with the top four or five advancing to stepladder finals format.

COLLEGE BOWL TOURNEYS EVENT

CANTON — The next College Bowl Tournaments event will be a doubles at 10 a.m. April 15 at Eastbury Bowling Center. 

This is a change from the original schedule. Entry fee is $130. 

Bowlers will roll four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top four teams for single-game match play.

TRAVEL LEAGUE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

CANTON — The Northeast Ohio Travel League is accepting draft applications for its 2023-24 season.

The league is a scratch league of 16 teams with four divisions with three bowlers per team, subject to change for next season. League fees are $25 per night, with a 30-week season.

The league currently includes centers in Stark, Summit, Wayne, Portage and Tuscarawas counties. Bowling times range from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. depending on the center.

There is a $10 application fee.
