BOWLING BRIEFS: Area squad tops field at Petersen Classic; Hall of Fame Summer Series continues; Youth Masters set in Youngstown

PETERSEN CLASSIC: Canton squads top field

WAUWATOSA, Wis. — Five members of an Canton squad topped the field following the Memorial Day weekend during the 113th Petersen Classic at Bowlero Wauwatosa.

He was followed by teammates Mark Suchan of Uniontown (1,579), Tallmdage’s John Randolph (1,579), Canton’s Brett McCourry (1,577) and Clinton’s Sean Rich (1,572). Also in the top 10 are Canal Fulton’s Tristan Stewart (1,562) and Matt Frock (1,555), Akron’s Anthony Sutcliffe (1,540), Massillon’s Alex Lincoln (1,537) and Uniontown’s Tony Varn (1,535).

Massillon’s J.D. Jones set the pace by finishing with 1,607 total pinfall over his eight games (233 average) to top the field in the event.

The Petersen Classic, founded in 1921 by Louis P. Petersen, who believed “if the winning scores were low, then more people would take a chance and bowl,” according to the tourney’s website.

The tourney was moved to Bowlero Wauwatosa in 2021 and runs from April through August. It’s original site in Chicago was at the former Archer-35th Recreation and has been through five sites since.

TOURNAMENTS: HOF Summer Series continues June 8

CANTON — The second event of the second annual Hall of Fame Summer Series, sponsored by Jimbo’s Landscaping, is set for 7 p.m. June 8 at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes.

The oil pattern will be the 2023 U.S. Open Pattern No. 2. Entry fee is $45, with bowlers rolling four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top five for the stepladder finals. One-in-five bowlers will cash.

Each week’s winner plus the next 20 in the summer point standings will qualify for the series finale on Aug. 10.

JUNIOR EVENT: Youngstown Masters set

CANFIELD — The 15th annual Youngstown Youth Masters is June 3 and 4 at Boardman Lanes and Aaron Lanes.

Entry fee is $80, with bowlers rolling 12 qualifying games over a two-day period, four each on different length oil patters, before the field is ut to the five bowlers in the boys and girls division for a stepladder finals June 4 at Amron Lanes.

A SMART scholarship of $750 will be awarded in both the boys and girls divisions, with one out of 10 cashing. Reservations are closes, but still call for possible openings.
