PWBA: Pros return to Parma Heights for tourney

PARMA HEIGHTS — The Professional Women’s Bowling Association will be in Northeast Ohio this weekend for the Bowlers Journal Cleveland Open.

The tournament begins with a pro-am and official practice session Thursday before 12 games of qualifying kick off the event at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday.

A field of 100 players is slated to participate, including recent champion Jordan Richard of Maumee. A total of 13 other Ohioans are in the field.

* WHAT: Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) Bowlers Journal Cleveland Open, the seventh event of the 2023 PWBA Tour season

– Thursday, June 8

3 p.m. – Official practice session (90 minutes)

7 p.m. – Bowl with the Pros, where fans bowl alongside their favorite PWBA players in a

– Friday, June 9

10 a.m. – Qualifying – Round 1, 6 games

5 p.m. – Qualifying – Round 2, 6 games (cut to top third of the field)

– Saturday, June 10

9 a.m. – Qualifying – Round 3, 6 games (cut to top 12)

2 p.m. – Qualifying – Round 4, 6 games (cut to top 5 competitors for stepladder finals)

  6:30 p.m. – Stepladder Finals, live on BowlTV

* PRO-AM: Bowl with the pros is set for 7 p.m. Thursday. Bowlers will bowl three games, with strikes given in frames 3, 6 and 9. Adult entry is $55; senior entry (ages 60 and older and youth entry (ages 17 and below) is $45. Bowler receive group photo, tournament program, freed admission to practice session; PWBA wristband. * NOTEBOOK: This will mark the fourth time that the PWBA Tour has come to Parma Heights and the greater Cleveland area. Stephanie Zavala of Downey, Calif., won the 2021 Greater Cleveland Open by defeating Bryanna Coté of Tucson, Arizona, 247-216. Zavala is coming off a win in the PWBA BowlTV Classic in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The 2023 PWBA season will have 12 events taking place across the country. Shannon O’Keefe of Shiloh, Ill., is the reigning PWBA Player of the Year, and Olivia Farwell of Elizabethtown, Pa., was the 2022 PWBA Rookie of the Year.

There also will be a PWBA Regional event held at Yorktown Lanes on June 11. The one-day tournament will start at 10 a.m with 101 players in that field. Admission to that event is free.
