Bowling briefs: Area players perform well in tourneys, Akron Open preview

SWEEPER: McKinney, Ashby lead at Akron
AKRON — Ty McKinney and Ryan Ashby, top-seeded in the 12-team field, captured Sunday’s doubles sweeper at Spins Bowl Akron.

McKinney and Ashby defeated No. 3 seed Vincent Ludwig and Tabitha Schlupe in the title match to win $448. Second-seeded Tony Godden and Victor Varner finished third followed by Joseph Horvatich and Ben Lichniak in fourth in the four-team stepladder finals.

McKinney and Ashby finished with 1,941 during the four-game qualifier to top the field by 61 pins. Godden posted the high individual qualifying series of 1,011 and the high game of 289.

The next doubles sweeper is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at Spins Bowl Akron. For details, contact Frank Dallas via Facebook.


BAKER SWEEPER: Area team tops Legacy field
COSHOCTON — The team of Justin McIlvain, Dylan Rinella, Brian Ball, Branden Ball and J.D. Jones topped a 13-team field to win the second annual 5-Man Baker Bash Scratch Classic at Legacy Lanes and Lounge.

The No. 2 qualifiers, the area team stopped the team of Ethan McDonald, Xander Brody, Andrew Amore, Evan Thro and Alberto Dunlap to earn the win in the five-team stepladder finals.

The winning team also earned a $200 bonus. The remainder of the top five included: 3, Chris Miller, Jeff Oswald, Michael Adams, Kevin Kittell, Tony West; 4, Cooper Smith, Jordan Norris, Chase Barstow, Frank Testa and Bryce Oliver; 5, Travis Friend, Ryan Patterson, Nathan Brookover, Owen Farish and Corey Wagner.

The qualifying format was 20 Baker System games over 20 lanes with a cut to the top five.

JTBA: Two area players claim Akron titles
AKRON
— Uniontown’s Zachary Abbott and Wooster’s Abbie Leiendecker claim U18 titles during Sunday’s Junior Tournament Bowlers Association Akron Youth Open at Spins Bowl Akron. Abbott, a Lake High School junior, and tied for the No. 4 seed following the five-game qualifier, topped No. 9 seed Matt Willis to claim the win. The top-seeded Leiendecker, a recent Wooster graduate who will be attending Louisiana Tech in the fall, was the only player in the girls 18U division who averaged 200 during qualifying. She stopped Jillian Justinger 392-324 in the title match. Other champions included:

COMING UP: Akron Open set this weekend at Station 300
AKRON — A field of 264 players is set to compete during the 2023 Akron Open, set for Saturday and Sunday at Station 300 Akron (former Stonehedge Family Fun Center).

Two squads will bowl singles shifts of six qualifying games on the house oil pattern at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday before the field is cut to the top 1-in-5 for Sunday’s five-game casher’s round, which begins at 9 a.m., with all pins carrying over.

The field will then be cut again to the top 24 for five more games before the field is cut to the top five for the stepladder finals.

First place will be worth $4,000. Michael Martell is the defending champion.

In addition, 110 teams are entered into the Akron Open Doubles, set for 7 p.m. Friday also at Station 300. Teams will bowl four games to determine the winner.
