TOURNAMENT REPORT: Pro-am winners announced at Park Centre

SMITH-BEHRA PRO-AM

NORTH CANTON — Brandon Clifford was the overall winner during the Fred Smith-Dick Behra Pro-Am, which was held prior to the PBA50-PBA60 Doubles-Park Centre Lanes Central Open at Park Centre Lanes.

Clifford shot 774 during the 9-pin, no-tap three-game event and, with his three pro scores, finished with 1,545 total pinfall, just two pins ahead of Renae Burns, who had an 851 series, including a 300 game.

Glenn Witsamen captured the senior division with 1,514 after a 671 series.

Other winners included:

  • Eric Rider, high school-college division, with 1,493;
  • Tristan Broom, Special Olympics division, with 1,412;
  • Carl Frame, 93, super seniors division, with 1,378;
  • Tino Mariani, youth division, 1,267.

A total of 68 bowlers participated in the pro-am along with 13 senior professionals. There were three no-tap 300 games shot by Burns, Nathan Sommers and Shannon Jones.

OHIO MATCHPLAY

COSHOCTON — Mike Clark Jr. defeated Greg Leser 268-165 to capture the Ohio Matchplay Tournament at Legacy Lanes.

En route to the title, Clark defeated Steve Easterday (213-191), Larry Achten (266-173) in the eight-bowler match-play round.

Achten was the top qualifier in the 50-and-older event with 1,162 over five games, including a 300 in Game 4, while Clark was the No. 5 seed. The event drew 33 players.

SPINS BOWL DOUBLES: Last week’s Spins Bowl-Akron scratch doubles was canceled due to a lack of entries. The next scheduled event is at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at Spins Bowl Akron. Contact Frank Dallas for information.

HDP: Hit Dem Pockets has another of its Sunday Doubles Sweepers set for 4:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at North Woods Lanes in Macedonia. In addition, a pair of new events have been added. The HDP Holiday Cash event is set for 10 a.m. Nov. 11 and 12 also at North Woods. And the HDP Scratch Open is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 6 at AMF Riviera Lanes. TRIWAY SWEEPER: Bobby Wenger captured the four-game Try Not To Suck singles scratch sweeper at Triway Lanes recently. He finished with 1,001. The remainder of the top four included Derek Duncan 922, Wash Haney 879 and Tim Voytko 870. Sunday’s event was not completed at the time of posting.

COLLEGE BOWL TOURNAMENTS: The next College Bowl Tournaments group event is a doubles set for 10 a.m. Oct. 21 at Park Centre Lanes in North Canton. Entry fee is $130 per team, with bowlers rolling four qualifying games before the field is cut for single-game match play. TRIPLE T TOURNAMENTS: What’s Sleep? II tourney is set for 11 p.m. Sept. 30 at Bowlero Lanes of Toledo. This is a scratch doubles event, with eight qualifying games, with the field being cut for Baker System match play based on the number of entries. MEGA TOURNAMENT: The $10,000 HP Lanes MEGA Event is set for June 8 and 9, 2024, at HP Lanes in Columbus. The event carries a $300 entry fee. For details, contact Jody Boyd via Facebook.

JUNIOR-JUNIOR-SENIOR: The ProCore Health Brokers $4,000 Junior-Junior-Senior Trio tournament is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 13 at Lex Lanes in Lexington. Entry fee is $450 per team with teams bowling five qualifying games before the cut to the top five for the stepladder finals. At least one player must be age 50 or older, but teams may have multiple 50-year-olds. For information, contact Jody Boyd via Facebook.

SINGLES MARATHON: The $3,500 Two-Shot HP Lanes Singles Marathon is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 16 at HP Lanes in Columbus. Entry fee is $150 with bowlers rolling four games on one house shot and for additional games on a second house shot following a re-oil. For information, contact Jody Boyd via Facebook.

ALUMNI TOURNAMENT: The Stark County High School Bowling Conference has restarted its annual Alumni Tournament, which is set for 11 a.m. Oct. 22 at Park Centre Lanes. Entry fee is $170 per team, with each team (made up of players from the same high school or people who either coach or reside in the school district) bowling 12 Baker System games before the field is cut to the top eight for match play.
