CANTON — It has been said that your second 300 game comes easier after your first.
But don’t try to tell 44-year-old Plain Township right-hander Dawn Davis that.
“There were some nerves still. They say the second one comes easier, but …” Davis said. “I’ll always remember that first one. I was super excited and I couldn’t stop shaking.”
Davis, an eighth-grade math teach in the Green Local Schools, finished that game in the Eastbury Mixed Trio league recently with 298. It came in Game 2 en route to a career-high 764 series.
“On the last shot, I almost left a bucket (2-4-5-8),” said Davis, who bowls in just one league but also assists behind the scenes with the GlenOak High School bowling teams. “A pin came off the wall and two more fell over. I just got the ball too far to the right and it didn’t finish for me.”
But that didn’t stop Davis’ run. After starting with 231 in Game 1 and coming back with 298, she started Game 3 with the first six strikes before finishing with 235 using her Hammer Black Widow Red Legend.
“I’ve had that ball for a long time and it’s the only ball I have. I’m a one bowling ball person who bowls once a week and I love it,” said Davis, who admittedly “has been bowling as long as I can remember.”
“My dad and mom got me into the bowling alley as a young kid and I’ve been there ever since.”
Davis’ target area was “between the second and third arrow.”
“It’s pretty much that every night,” Davis added. “It just comes down to how much I want to swing the ball to the right.
“I didn’t move a lot that night. I was just rolling the ball and I couldn’t do anything wrong.”
The 300 game from last season still remains clear in her mind.
“I just couldn’t stop shaking. I was just saying to myself, ‘Please God., just let this be the one,’ ” Davis said. “I was just having fun throwing the ball. Everyone came up and congratulated me.”
Davis said she was “loose and comfortable” for her career-high series.
“I just felt like it was my night,” she added.
With one milestone checked off her list another remains.
“I’m still hoping one day to get an 800,” Davis added, “but we will see if that happens.”
