CANTON — Nico Fromholtz is a junior varsity soccer player at Massillon Washington High School.
Two years ago, at the urging of his mother, Jen, he decided to give bowling a try.
“My mom is a coach and she told me it would be fun,” the 16-year-old right-hander said. “So I decided to join the team.
“I didn’t think I would be this good.”
During a Dec. 4 match against Louisville at Eastbury Bowling Center, Fromholtz rolled the first 300 game of his young career. He finished the day with a 485 series, but the Tigers lost the match 2,569-2,460.
“It was just amazing … all the attention. It was crazy,” said Fromholtz, who is averaging 217.33 in conference play. “It’s something I’ve never experienced before.
“I’ve been practicing at least a couple of times a week. That, and hard work paid off.”
Fromholtz learned his bowling style from his cousin, former Perry all-conference player Erica Sanders.
“She taught me my freshman year,” Fromholtz said of Sanders, who graduated in 2008.
He admitted his final two strikes were “pretty lucky.” But he also didn’t realize until the 10th frame what he was accomplishing.
“I didn’t even know we were in the 10th frame until someone told me. I was pretty chill up until then,” Fromholtz said. “The second one came in light and carried. But the third one was very high, but it struck.”
He shot just 185 in Game 2.
“The nerves kicked in and I kind of crashed in Game 2,” he added.
But he reached a career milestone after just two years in the sport. It marked only the third 300 game thrown in Massillon’s program history.
“It’s all pretty crazy,” Fromholtz said.
