Tourney report: Clark captures third OMT title on New Year’s Eve

COLUMBUS — Mike Clark Jr. earned his second victory of the season, topping a 38-bowler field in the Ohio Matchplay Tournaments inaugural NYE Challenge Event at Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus.

The event was contested on the new OMT37 oil pattern, with 32 players over age 50, five over 60 and one over 70 competing. The cut for match play was at 1,107 total pinfall.

Clark took the title match 217-212, finishing with a late four-strike run for the win after trailing early against Trent Marner. Clark now has three total OMT wins.

OTHER EVENTS

HDP: Scott McIntire (regular), Lydia Stephens (women) and Brian Esterle (senior) captured division titles during the Hangover Classic at Brookgate Lanes in Brookpark with 92 total players in the field. The HDP’s next event is the ninth annual MLK Tournament Jan. 13, 14 and 15 at AMF Riviera Lanes in Fairlawn. There are four shifts set each day for the handicap event, which will include singles and doubles. Entry fees are $45 for singles, $90 per team for doubles and mixed doubles, with a $10 bonus for senior, ladies and scratch singles. COLLEGE BOWL TOURNAMENTS: The next College Bowl Tournaments event is a doubles event set for 10 a.m. Jan. 20 at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes. Entry fee is $130 per team, with teams rolling four qualifying games before the field is cut to the top four teams for single-game elimination matches. JUNIOR-JUNIOR-SENIOR TRIO: The ProCore Health Brokers $4,500 JR-JR-SR trio is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 13 at Lex Lanes in Lexington. Teams will bowl five qualifying games before the field is cut to the to five for the stepladder finals. Each team must have at least one bowler age 50 or older and can have three. MSBS STATION 300 AKRON DOUBLES: The MSBS Station 300 Akron House Shot Baker Doubles is set for 11:30 a.m. Jan. 27 at Station 300 Akron (formerly Stonehedge). Entry fee is $120 per team, with teams rolling eight Baker System games before the field is cut too the top 16 for two-game elimination matches by seed. First place is worth $2,200 based on 90 teams. YOUNGSTOWN MASTERS: The annual Youngstown Masters is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 27 and 3 p.m. Jan. 28 at Holiday Bowl in Struthers. Bowlers will bowl three five-game qualifying rounds on three Kegel oil patterns over a two-day period before the field is cut to the top five for the stepladder finals. First place is worth $2,000, based on 50 entries. This is a sanctioned event. TRIWAY LANES: Chris Safarik captured Triway Lanes’ annual New Year’s Eve 9-pin, no-tap tournament with 1,135, including three 298 games. Second was Bobby Wenger (1,131) and Les Mann finished third (1,129) in the 40-player field.
