H.S. tourneys: Rootstown teams, Boardman, Nordonia win at Preview

KENT — The Rootstown High School boys and girls topped Division II while the Boardman girls and Nordonia boys led their respective Division I fields during the 18th Rootstown Rover Sectional Preview on Saturday and Sunday at Spins Bowl-Kent.

Both tournaments were bowled on the 40-foot OHSAA sectional-district oil pattern, which was just recently released to coaches. The format was three regular games followed by six Baker System games.

Among the seven-team Division II boys field Sunday, Rootstown finished with 3,953 total pinfall, 187 pins ahead of Peninsula Woodridge (3,766) with Ravenna (3,598) taking third.

Justin Miller led the Rovers with a 672 series, and Nick Mooehead shot 584.

Fairport Harbor Harding’s Eddie Krafchak turned in the high game and high sees with 268 and 693, respectively. Tulsa’s Cameron Kilgore bowled as an individual and had 645.

In the seven-team Division II girls field, Rootstown topped the standing with 3,521, finishing just 15 pins ahead of Fairport Harbor (3,506), with Rootstown’s B team taking third (2,714).

Maggie Frick led the Rovers and the tournament with a 592 series, and tied for high game with Rootstown B’s Mal Butcher at 204.

In Saturday’s Division I event, Boardman’s girls topped a nine-team event with 3,746, finishing 219 pins ahead of second-place Tallmadge (3,527), with Nordonia taking third (3,516).

Boardman’s Kaitlyn Greenaway led the event with as 705 series and had the high game with 243. Teammate Marissa Funk also shot 577. Tallmadge’s Alex Pavlov had a 603 series,, while Tallmadge’s Maria Mara had 573 and Nordonia’s Abby Toronski 557.

In the nine-team Division I boys division, Nordonia finished with 4,300 to top Boardman (4,116) and Twinsburg (3,974).

Josh Ware led the Knights with a tourney-high 670 series, and Justin Roberts added 647. Boardman’s Caden Wilcox finished with 663, Twinsburg’s Lucas Tinter had 662 and Akron Hoban’s 653, with as tourney-high game of 252.

DOVER INVITATIONAL

The top-seeded Minerva girls captured the title during the Dover Invitational on Saturday at Wabash Lanes.

The Lions defeated Garaway 3-2 in the best-of-five Baker System semifinals before stopping Carrollton 3-2 in the title match.

Minerva’s Kayla Henderhan turned in the top series with 624, and Carrollton’s Mackenzie Rummell was second with 595, followed by the Warriors’ Zoey Elliott with 591.

Results of the boys division were not available.

COUGAR CLASSIC

At Colonial City Lanes in Mount Vernon, Celina’s girls and Anthony Wayne’s boys emerged with titles during the Cougar Classic, which was bowled on a difficult sport shot oil pattern.

The format was three regular game and five Baker System games, followed by best-of-five match play in the five-team stepladder finals.

In the girls division, Celina topped Hilliard Bradley 2-1 to claim the win, with Triway finishing fourth and Wadsworth taking fifth.

In the boys division, Anthony Wayne topped Hilliard Bradley 2-1, with Triway following to Wayne in the semifinals 2-1.

Celiina was the girls qualifying leader with 3,137, finishing 308 ahead of Newark. Bradley topped Anthony Wayne in boys qualifying 3,211-3,174. There were 11 teams in each division.

Bradley’s Bryan Nashalski had the top series with 569, followed by Newark’s Ricky Frazier with 567. Triway’s Emma Yoder had the tourney-high series and led the girls with 617 and Jade Gabor of Newarkd had 570.

PANTHER JV CHALLENGE

Cuyahoga Falls’ Isiah Lutz shot 300 with a 739 series to highlight Saturday’s Norton Panther JV Challenge at Charger Lanes in Norton. The event was bowled on a house oil pattern.

Cleveland St. Ignatius topped a 14-team field in the boys division with 3,772, followed by Berea-Midpark (3,485) and Green (3,363).

Cooper Wilson led the Wildcats with 585, and Collin Robinson added 564. Berea-Midpark’s Shawn Stelter had the high gates in Games 2 and 3 with 247 and 235, respectively, finishing with a 665 series.

In the five-team girls division, Akron Hoban topped the field with 2,500, followed by East Canton (2,447) and St. Jospeh’s Academy (2,441).

East Canton’s Tana Alspaugh had the high series with 462, followed by St. Jospeh’s Emily Ostrum and East Canton’s Daisy Becker with 397 each. Alspaugh had the high game overall with 169.
